TORONTO -- After allowing eight home runs and a total of 19 runs in Saturday's loss to the San Diego Padres, the Toronto Blue Jays have promoted RHP Jacob Waguespack from triple-A Buffalo.

In a corresponding move, LHP Tim Mayza has been placed on the 10-day IL with forearm tightness.

Waguespack, 25, has allowed 28 runs on 49 hits this season, striking out 44 and issuing 21 free passes over 43 innings of work, all of which has come out of Buffalo's starting rotation. Since being signed as an undrafted free agent by the Phillies in 2015, the 6-foot-6 right-hander has accounted for an ERA of 4.07 over 369 minor league frames.

Dating back to Wednesday night's 13-inning marathon against the Boston Red Sox, Toronto's bullpen has been taxed to the tune of 20 innings of work over their last four games. Marred in a 16-game run without the benefit of an off day, manager Charlie Montoyo will need to receive some length out of Marcus Stroman on Sunday. If things go sideways for the Blue Jays, Waguespack, who last pitched for Buffalo on May 22, could be on the hook to eat a healthy amount innings during Sunday's interleague finale.

Also spotted in the Blue Jays clubhouse on Sunday, Justin Shafer, who made the trip north with Waguespack but will not be activated on Sunday.

In 15 games with the Bisons this season, Shafer, 26, has posted an ERA of 0.96 while striking out 16 of the 75 batters he's faced. Once activated, this will be his second go around at the big league level.
