Ontario Blue Jays and Junior National Team alum Jordan Romano left the Toronto Blue Jays’ game against the Baltimore Orioles in the eighth inning on Friday night with an injury to the middle finger on his right hand.

The Markham, Ont., native is undergoing tests to determine the extent of the injury.

After retiring the first two batters he faced on Friday, Romano gave up a game-tying home run to Orioles first baseman Renato Nunez. The Canuck righty then started flexing his right hand when facing Jose Iglesias, the following batter.

“It wasn’t a blister. It was a right middle finger injury,” Montoyo told reporters after the game.

Romano, 27, has been the Blue Jays’ best reliever this season. In 15 appearances, spanning 14 2/3 innings, he is 2-1 with a 1.23 ERA and has 21 strikeouts. He recently assumed the club’s closer duties and has registered two saves.

Selected in the 10th round of the 2014 MLB draft, Romano had spent parts of six seasons in the Blue Jays’ organization before making his big league debut last season. In 17 appearances with the club in 2019, the hard-throwing right-hander registered 21 strikeouts in 15 1/3 innings.
