The Toronto Blue Jays have signed veteran infielder Freddy Galvis to a one-year contract that includes an option for the 2020 season.

Galvis, who batted .248 with 13 home runs and played in all 162 games for the San Diego Padres in 2018, will reportedly make $4 million this season. The deal also includes a reported $5.5 million option for 2020. If the option isn’t exercised, the club will pay Galvis a $1 million buyout.

Signed out of Venezuela by the Philadelphia Phillies in 2007, the now 29-year-old infielder has played parts of seven seasons in the big leagues. He spent his first six with the Phillies and belted 20 home runs and stole 17 bases in 151 games in his best season with the club in 2016.

Primarily a shortstop, Galvis has also played second base, third base and the outfield during his major league career. Over the past four seasons, he has been one of the most durable major leaguers, suiting up for at least 151 contests in each of those campaigns, including all 162 in his last two.

In 804 career major league games, he boasts a .246/.270/.394 slash line and is considered an above average fielder.

To make room for Galvis on the 40-man roster, the Blue Jays designated reliever Danny Barnes for assignment. The 29-year-old right-hander, who has spent parts of three seasons with the Blue Jays, struggled in 2018, posting a 5.71 ERA in 47 appearances.

In 2017, Barnes was one of the Blue Jays’ most reliable relievers, registering a 3.55 ERA in 60 appearances.
