It may not feel like baseball weather in much of the country, but the college season is officially underway. Plenty of Canadians saw action and are already making a name for themselves.
Let’s take a look at the top performers from the past week.
Morro drives Drovers’ offence
University of Science and the Arts’ Corey Morro (Cheltenham, Ont.) started hot out of the box. In a 2-1 series win over Our Lady of the Lakes, Morro had three hits, walked three times, drove in a run and stole a base. During a 10-3 Game 2 victory, he went 2-for-2 with a double two walks.
Canadians thrive in the desert
Jackson Martin (Grand Coulee, Sask.) and Colin Plain (Saskatoon, Sask.) were enjoying the weather in California over the weekend as the College of the Desert split a pair of games against LA Harbor.
Martin combined to go 4-for-8 with three walks and three RBIs. He hit a solo home run in a 11-2 Game 1 win.
Plain got the start in the blowout win, lasting five innings. He allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits with a walk and five strikeouts to pick up his first win of the season.
MacDonald pounds two hits for Pima
Matt MacDonald (Kamloops, BC) collected two hits, walked four times, drove in a run and swiped a base in three games for Pima Community College. The effort helped lead the Aztecs to a three-game sweep of the College of Southern Idaho.
Kilbreath picks up win No. 1
Right-hander Tyson Kilbreath (Calgary, Alta.) earned his first win of the season in his first start for the College of the Sequoias. Over five innings, Kilbreath surrendered two runs on five hits. He walked two and fanned six.
Gomm helps Pilots take flight
Austin Gomm (Georgetown, Ont.) had a stellar opening weekend, amassing three hits in LSU Shreveport’s three-game sweep of MacPherson. He went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs in a 17-1 Game 1 win. All told, he had the three knocks, three walks, four RBI and a stolen base.
Alvarez outstanding on opening weekend
Northwest Florida State’s David Alvarez (Woodbridge, Ont.) had an opening weekend to remember. He started it off going 2-for-4 in a 4-3 win over the State College of Florida before stroking three hits in a 6-2 loss to Miami Dade. In the finale, a 9-8 victory over the State College of Florida, he hit a solo home run en route to a 3-for-3 game with a walk.
One week down, about 20 to go.
