What do James Paxton (Seattle Mariners, Ladner, BC), Nic Pivetta (Boston Red Sox, Victoria, BC), Zach Pop (Miami Marlins, Brampton, Ont.), Cal Quantrill (Cleveland Indians, Port Hope, Ont.), Jordan Romano (Toronto Blue Jays, Markham, Ont.) and injured Rowan Wick (Chicago Cubs, North Vancouver, BC) have in common?
All six made their big league teams out of Spring Training, and each played college ball.
Four more Canadians made Opening Day rosters, Josh Naylor (Cleveland Indians, Mississauga, Ont.) Tyler O’Neill (St. Louis Cardinals, Maple Ridge, BC), Mike Soroka (Atlanta Braves, Calgary, Alta.) and Joey Votto (Cincinnati Reds, Etobicoke, Ont.) made the leap to pro ball out of high school, but had all made college baseball commitments. There’s a chance you could be reading about a future big leaguer in this week’s BMOC.
And the 11th is Blue Jays 1B Vladimir Guerrero (Montreal, Que.) who signed as an international free agent as a teenager. Check out the best of the best from last week below.
Harold hits four homers, takes home GPAC Player of the Week
Pitchers had few answers when Colton Harold (Abbotsford, BC) stepped in the box. Harold led Northwestern to a 13-8 win in Game 1 against Dakota Wesleyan with a 2-for-4 game with two, two-run home runs. Game 2 saw him go 4-for-4 with a walk and four RBIs. In Game 3, a 9-2 win, he was 2-for-3 with a solo shot and a grand slam. He also walked in the win. To put a lid on things, he went 2-for-4 in the only loss of the week for the Red Raiders in Game 4. The huge week earned him the Great Plains Athletic Conference Player of the Week.
Jackson named NSAA Pitcher of the Week after 18 K performance
You read that right. Bellevue’s Corey Jackson (Calgary, Alta.) struck out 18 in a complete game, seven-inning shutout of Viterbo. Jackson, now 5-2, gave up four hits and walked two to move his ERA to 1.61 over 67 innings. The North Star Athletic Association named him their Pitcher of the Week for his dazzling performance.
Marks spectacular season continues
Jordan Marks (Bright’s Grove, Ont.) has been lights out this season for the USC Upstate Spartans. Last Friday was more of the same as he allowed one run over 7 2/3 innings in a 3-2 win over Radford. He scattered five hits, walked two and struck out eight to improve to 5-1. The Great Lake Canadian grad lowered his ERA to 1.72.
Turcotte tosses complete game
Sam Turcotte (Toronto, Ont.) gave up a pair of runs in the top of the first in his Game 1 start against Hartford, but shut it down the rest of the way on route to a 5-2 Stony Brook win. Turcotte went all seven innings and just one of the two runs were earned. He surrendered five hits and issued a pair of walks. The Graduate Student struck out six to improve to 3-1. The Seawolves would go on to sweep the four-game series and are now 8-0 in America East Conference play.
Bourassa backs San Francisco to win
Righty Landen Bourassa (Lethbridge, Alta.) evened his record at 2-2 thanks to seven strong innings of work in the San Francisco Dons’ 4-3, Game 1 win over Loyola Marymount. Bourassa conceded three runs (one earned) on six hits and a walk. He struck out two to help the Dons to their third straight win.
Hewitt hammers Oklahoma, West Virginia
The No. 11 Oklahoma State Cowboys took three-of-four games last week thanks in large part to the play of Max Hewitt (Midhurst, Ont.). Hewitt had six hits in the four games, including two in a come-from-behind 5-4 win against Bedlam baseball rival Oklahoma. Along with the six hits he also chipped in five RBIs and five walks. Following the win over Oklahoma, the Cowboys won their series with West Virginia 2-1.
MacLeod throws shutout
The Itasca offence supplied just one run in their game against Mesabi Range, but Mason MacLeod (Winnipeg, Man.) made sure it stood up by spinning a complete game, seven-inning shutout. MacLeod allowed six hits, walked two and punched out six.
Purple Eagles sweep Quinnipiac
The Niagara Purple Eagles are flying high after sweeping Quinnipiac in a four-game set. They are now 8-4 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play. Ben Erwin (Spruce Grove, Alta.) and Cole Tucker (Mount Pearl, Nfld.) were standouts on the mound and in the box.
Erwin worked five innings and gave up two runs (one earned) on five hits in a 4-3 win in Game 3. He issued one walk and struck out a pair.

Tucker then collected a hit, two walks and was hit by a pitch in an 8-7, Game 2 win. Cunningham goes give as Pilots crush Mustangs
Hunter Cunningham (Mission, BC) allowed one run on a pair of hits over five innings of work for LSU Shreveport in a 16-1 drubbing of the University of the Southwest. Cunningham walked four and struck out three in the lopsided affair.
Nixon knows how to swing it
Eight hits in six games isn’t bad, just ask Drew Nixon (Toronto, Ont) of the City Valley State Vikings. The junior infielder combined his hits with seven RBIs and a stolen base. Five of his eight hits went for doubles. The Vikings finished the week 4-2.
Clapperton chips in five hits
Michael Clapperton (Calgary, Alta.) had a hit in the University of Texas Permian Basin’s 9-1 series opening loss to Arkansas-Fort Smith. He had a hit and a walk as his team was smoked 25-3 in Game 2. Looking for a bounce back, the Falcons got a 3-for-4 performance from the Chandler Gilbert Community transfer in a 5-4, Game 3 win to secure a win in the series. He also drove in two and was hit by a pitch in the final game.
Hicks, Jones combine for 24 hits
Both Connor Hicks (Toronto, Ont.) and Ben Jones (Toronto, Ont.) caught fire for Mineral Area Community College in a week that saw them play eight games
Hicks had 10 hits, walked 12 times, drove in 12 and stole five bases for the Cardinals. He homered in back-to-back games in wins over Jefferson and Missouri Valley.
Not to be outdone, Jones stroked 14 hits, worked six walks, drove in five and stole nine bases. He posted a pair of 3-for-4 games in wins over St. Charles. The Cardinals went 5-3 on the week.
Porcellato plays well against tough competition
Despite dropping 3-of-4 games to No. 23 Indiana Wesleyan, Marian’s Matteo Porcellato (Pitt Meadows, BC) was an offensive standout. In a 4-3 win in Game 1, Porcellato went 3-for-4 with a double, a walk and two RBIs. During an 8-2 loss in Game 2, he went 2-for-3 with another double and a RBI. He stroked his third double in a 9-1 loss in Game 3. In the finale, he went 2-for-4, with you guessed it, yet another double in an 11-7 loss.

Tweet terrific for Mesabi Range
It’s going be hard for Dawson Tweet (Russell, Man.) to top the offensive performance he had last week. Tweet kick started the Mesabi Range offence with a 4-for-4 game with a walk and two RBIs in a 10-7 win over Hibbing. In the rematch, which went Hibbing’s way by a 12-4 score, Tweet went 4-for-5 with a RBI and a stolen base. He then went 2-for-4 with a stolen base in a 1-0 loss to Itasca. Keller, McKillican lead Grizzlies to 5-0 week
Domination doesn’t even begin to describe performance of the Georgia Gwinnett Grizzlies last week. Over their five wins, two against Columbia International and three in a sweep of Johnson, they didn’t allow a run and scored 78. Griffin Keller (Pilot Butte, Sask.) sparked the offence, while Adam McKillican (Comox, BC) was brilliant on the mound.
Keller had eight hits, including a solo home run in a 10-0 win over Columbia International to open the week. In addition to the knocks, Keller walked twice, drove in eight, stole four bases and was hit by a pitch.

Hicks has seven hits
Arkansas Little Rock pitchers didn’t have much fun facing Arkansas State’s Liam Hicks (Toronto, Ont.) in a three-game series over the weekend. Hicks collected a hit and worked two walks in a 10-2 win in Game 1. He opened up the scoring in Game 2 with a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth and finished the game 4-for-4 as his squad shut out the Trojans 4-0. The Redwolves got a pair of hits and three RBIs from the Canadian in Game 3 as they earned the sweep with a 10-6 win.

Daniel Lichty (Denfield, Ont.) had a hot bat in Huntington’s six games. Lichty finished with 11 hits, six RBIs and three stolen bases for the Foresters as they went 3-3. He had his best offensive game in a 10-6 win over Mount Vernon Nazarene when he put up four hits, with three RBIs and two stolen bases. A bright spot in the mediocre record was the fact that two of the wins came against NAIA No. 20 Taylor University.
Chester loses a tough one
It just wasn’t meant to be for Fynn Chester (Victoria, BC) and Salt Lake Community College in Game 1 of their series with the College of Southern Nevada. Chester went six innings and gave up a pair of runs on eight hits, but the two runs was all the opposition needed to hand the Chester and co. a 2-1 loss. The former British Columbia Premier Baseball League star walked one and struck out five. His record dropped to 4-2 with the defeat.
McCorrister pounds Presentation pitching
Jared McCorrister (Boissevain, Man.) of the Mayville State Comets had himself a nice series against Presentation College. McCorrister sparked the Comet offense in Game 1 by going 2-for-4 with a home run, three RBIs, a stolen base and a hit by pitch in a 13-0 win. He followed it up by finishing a single shy of the cycle in an 11-1, Game 2 win. In that game he went 3-for-5 with a two-run home run, a double, a triple and four RBIs. Then, in a 12-6 win in Game 3, he went 3-for-6 with three doubles and three RBIs. The Comets would go on to win Game 4 and sweep the series.

Grant goes deep twice
Things started off slow for Logan Grant (Calgary, Alta.) as he had just one hit in his first three games for Bismarck State, but it sure picked up from there. He walked twice and stole a base in a 14-4 win in Game 2 before collecting a hit, a walk and two RBIs in a 12-1 victory in Game 3.
