BMOC: Week 3

Welcome back to week three of the BMOC column. The weather wreaked havoc on the schedule last week but some Canadians saw action and continued to establish themselves as key contributors early in 2021. Below is a snapshot of the top performances from around the college game.

Palmegiani continues to power Southern Nevada

It was a busy week for the College of Southern Nevada as they had eight games on their schedule. Damiano Palmegiani (Surrey, BC) had a hit in all eight games, and finished the week with 13 in total. Five of those hits were home runs, including two, two-home run games, one in a 9-8 win over Pima and another in a 17-9 loss to Pima. In total, Palmegiani had the 13 hits, walked twice, was hit by three pitches, stole two bases and drove in 14. Through 12 games this season he leads the team with a .425 average to go along with a .528 on-base percentage, a 1.050 slugging percentage. His seven home runs and 20 RBIs lead all of NJCAA Division I.

Seginowich named Hitter of the Week

Nick Seginowich (Victoria, BC) was named the Lone Star Conference Hitter of the Week for his efforts in Division II No. 3 Angelo State’s series win over the No. 10 University of Texas at Tyler Patriots from February 5 to 7. Seginowich hit .556 with a .714 on-base percentage and slugged 1.333 over the three games. He also hit two home runs and drove in six. The Rams series with Arkansas Fort Smith scheduled for last weekend was postponed due to poor travel conditions.

Cappe tosses complete game

Lindsey Wilson College went 1-2 last week and their lone win was delivered by right hander Brady Cappe (Waterford, Ont.). Cappe threw a seven inning, complete game in a 12-1 win over Rio Grande. He gave up an unearned run on four hits, walked one and struck out 10.For his efforts, he was named Mid-South Conference Player of the Week.

Gauthier fans 10 in win

Mathieu Gauthier (Montreal, Que.) picked up his first win of the seasons as West Texas A&M thumped Eastern New Mexico 17-2. Gauthier tossed five scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and a walk, while punching out 10.

Monterrey with six hits

It wasn’t a great week in the win column for Roane State, as they went 1-3, but Gabriel Monterrey (Oakville, Ont.) was certainly a bright spot. In a 6-4 loss to Walters State to open the week, Monterrey went 2-for-3 with a solo home run. His blast came in the top of the seventh to extend the Raiders lead to 4-2. Walters State would rally with four in the bottom half, however, and win the game 6-4. The two teams tangled again in the second game of their double header, and it would once again be Walters State coming out on top, this time by a 4-2 score. Monterrey would have a hit in the Game 2 loss. The Raiders picked up their first win of the week, and second of the season, with a 6-2 victory over Volunteer State behind a 2-for-3 effort from Monterrey. He finished off the four games with a hit, a walk and a stolen base, as Volunteer State split the doubleheader with a 9-7 win.

Keller comes up with five hits, McKillican locks down save for Georgia Gwinnett

Griffin Keller (Pilot Butte, Sask.) was fueling the offence in Georgia Gwinnett’s three-game sweep of Freed Hardeman. In a 5-2, Game 1 win, Keller went 2-for-3. Keller collected a hit and worked a walk in a 4-3 Game 2 win, and closed out the series going 2-for-5. The Grizzlies went on to win the finale by an 8-3 margin.

Adam McKillican (Comox, BC) struck out two in an inning of work to earn his first save of the year in the 5-2, Game 1 win.

Edmands goes deep to close out sweep

The Matadors of Arizona Western outscored Northeastern 55-15 on route to a four-game sweep last week. Dylan Edmands (Regina, Sask.) had five hits, walked five times and drove in six in the series. His best game came in a 16-5 Game 4 win, when he went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs.

Texas at Tyler takes down in-state foe

Riley Jepson (Kamloops, BC) had a hit in each of the University of Texas at Tyler’s three games against Texas A&M International. Jepson launched a grand slam, and drove in five, in a 13-3 Game 3 win that helped the Patriots to the series sweep. He finished the three-game set with three hits, five walks, and seven RBIs.

Even more players will get back on the field as the Division I season kicks off this week. More games, means more Canadians in action. Remember to check back each week to read all about the top performers.
