Big Man On Campus Week 12

It was a successful week for Canadians in college baseball. Eye popping performances were on display around the diamond. Here is a look at the big games Canadians had for their teams.

UBC sweeps away Corban
What better way to start the column than with the University of British Columbia. The Thunderbirds had a stellar week as they swept Corban University. Connor Noble (Vancouver, BC) was keen on getting things off to a good start in Game 1. He gave up three runs, none of which were earned, over seven innings. He was able to scatter nine hits and struck out six. The T-Birds held on for a thrilling 4-3 victory.
Niall Windeler (Toronto, Ont.) took to the mound in Game 2 looking to one-up his teammate. He gave up two runs over seven strong with six hits and eight strikeouts. He improved his record to 3-2 in the 5-3 win. Both starters didn’t walk a batter in the first two games, a huge key to the team’s success.
Despite walking four, Tyler Gillies (London, Ont.) turned in arguably the best start of the week. He tossed a complete game shutout, allowing just six hits with seven punchouts. UBC scored one run but it was all they needed behind Gillies.
Let’s not forget about the offense that helped power UBC to their victories. Austen Butler (Port Coquitlam, BC) chipped in with seven hits, two RBIs and stole a base in the four-game sweep. He hit .471 in the series. Vinny Martin (Pender Island, BC) also hit .471 while Mitch Robinson (Surrey, BC) went a cool 7-for-14.

Winnipeg wins 3-of-4
The Winnipeg Wesmen took 3-of-4 from Dakota State last week. Garrett Jewell (Cambridge, Ont.) had four multi-hit games including a 3-for-5 showing in Game 3, a 15-14 loss, and a home run in Game 4. He drove in eight runs over the four games for the Wesmen.
Cole Paquin (Regina, Sask.) was also doing big things on the diamond. He had two hits in each of the first three games. He also had a home run and two walks in a 25-4 thumping of Dakota State in Game 2. He finished the series with seven hits, four walks, five RBIs and a pair of stolen bases.
Aiden Brook (Oakbank, Man.) had six hits, three walks, six RBIs and a stolen base in the series.

Pompey leads UK to 3-1 week
The University of Kentucky Wildcats charged Tristan Pompey (Brampton, Ont.) with the task of kick starting their offense by batting him leadoff. He didn’t disappoint, recording a hit in an 8-0 midweek win over the University of Tennessee-Martin. After going 3-for-5 with a RBI in UK’s series opening win against Southeastern Conference foe Missouri, he went a perfect 3-for-3 with a solo home run in the first and third innings. He also walked and was hit by a pitch in the loss. In the finale, he went 2-for-4 with another walk in a 6-1 win, clinching the series win for the Wildcats.

Pop works two games
Zach Pop (Brampton, Ont.) threw a scoreless inning with a strikeout in Game 2 of Kentucky’s series with Missouri. He came right back and pitched a clean 2/3 of an inning in the final game. The hard throwing right hander is 1-1 with a 4.15 ERA in 18 appearances, all in relief.

Hanmer boy hammers two home runs
Tyson Troscinski (Hanmer, Ont.) belted a pair of home runs on his way to a 7-for-17 week for Chesapeake.

All Hewitt does is hit
Max Hewitt (Midhurst, Ont.) was sizzling again this past week as he went 9-for-22 for Connors State.

No sitting around for Sattz
Ryan Sattz (Pickering, Ont.) didn’t wait around to get his week started for King University. In a 7-5 win over Charleston he went 2-for-3 with a walk. Despite another 2-for-3 showing his team was trounced by Lincoln Memorial 15-0 in their second game of the week. Next up was a three-game set with Limestone. Sattz recorded a hit and a walk in a 5-2, Game 1 win and a hit in a Game 2 loss. In the rubber match, which King won, he went 3-for-6 with a RBI.

Senior, Rattai rally Midland to winning record
Midland College played five games last week and it pulled out a winning record in the fifth and final one. Eric Senior (Toronto, Ont.) did a little bit of everything for the Chaparrals. He pounded out six hits, including a home run, eight RBIs and a stolen base. He is hitting .411 on the year with 15 home runs and 77 RBIs in 42 games. 
Teammate Nolan Rattai (Medicine Hat, Alta.) used eight hits and also hit a long ball. He knocked in seven and walked once to lead Midland to a 3-2 week.

Alp, Schulz lead Beavers to sweep of Sioux Falls
Sean Alp (Mississauga, Ont.) used eleven hits to power the Minot State Beavers to a four of a possible five wins last week, including a four game sweep of the University of Sioux Falls. His best game came in Game 2 of the series, a 16-10 win, where he went 4-for-5, legging out a triple and walking while driving in four. 
Jordan Schulz (Strasbourg, Sask.) went 7-for-17 on the week. He currently leads the Beavers in average at a .404 mark. Alp is third, hitting at a .345 clip.

Warkentin flexes muscle
It’s pretty safe to say Matt Warkentin (Leamington, Ont.) had fun stepping in the box for Johnson County Community College this past week. Not only did his team go 5-0 but he was a huge part of it. In a 7-5 win over Southeast he had a pair of hits, including a solo home run, a walk and three RBIs. He then had a hit and a RBI in their series opener against Allen County. The final three games of the series were ones to remember, as he hit a home run in each. His best overall game came in Game 4 when he went 3-for-3 with 5 RBIs in a 19-2 victory.

Crowder crew keeps slugging
Kobe Morris (Victoria, BC) reached nine times, eight by way of hits in Crowder College’s five games. In Game 4 of their series with Three Rivers Community College he went 3-for-3 with a double, triple and three RBIs.
Kyle MacDonald (Mississauga, Ont.)  went 3-for-4 in the final two games of the Three Rivers series to cap a solid week at the dish. In Game 3 he swatted a pair of long balls and drove in five. He also hit a home run in Game 2 of the series.

Marklund picks up win No. 5
Seven innings and an unearned run was enough for Brandon Marklund (North Vancouver, BC) to pick up his fifth win for No. 20 Bryan College. He allowed eight hits, struck out four and walked one. Bryan now has a 30-13 record.

Desjardins loses pitcher’s duel
Brandon Desjardins (Calgary, Alta.) pitched very well but unfortunately, his opponent pitched a little better. Desjardin threw seven innings, allowing six hits and a run in Community College of Spokane’s 1-0 loss to Yakima Valley. He struck out four and walked just one. The opposing starter threw a complete game to pick up the win.

Lewington appears twice
Arkansas Pine Bluff’s midweek contest with Missouri wasn’t pretty, a 15-6 loss, but CJ Lewington (Calgary, Alta.) pitched well in relief. He tossed 2 2/3 scoreless innings. He allowed a hit and walked three in the loss. He was back in action in Game 3 of the Golden Lions series with Alabama A&M. He pitched three scoreless, giving up one hit and striking out one. UAPB swept the Southwestern Athletic Conference series.

Clarke carves five scoreless
Damien Clarke (Carlisle, Ont.) threw five innings of scoreless relief for Monroe Community College. In his first appearance, he struck out four in a 9-3 win over Mercyhurst Northeast, a game in which Monroe pitchers struck out a combined 12. He struck out another pair against the Ithaca College JV’s over three innings.

Procopio solid in NU loss
It wasn’t a great weekend for the Niagara Purple Eagles as they were swept by Rider. Daniel Procopio (Toronto, Ont.) tossed five innings in Game 2, allowing an unearned run on four hits. He walked struck out nine and walked three in the 2-1 defeat.

Antchak goes at it for Louisiana Lafayette
We haven’t covered much of Brad Antchak (Langley, BC) lately but he certainly had a worthy week. He had six hits in four games, including a three-game sweep of Arkansas State. He also had five RBIs, three walks and two stolen bases. He is hitting .255 so far this season.

Complete Game for Krystien
Krystien Johnson-Batillana (Hamilton, Ont.) threw a complete game shutout, allowing just three hits and a walk while striking out eight. Davenport University took down Marygrove 11-0 behind his performance. Johnson-Batillana is now 6-2 in 2017.

U of Cumberlands backs Gapp to win
The No. 25 University of the Cumberlands supported Noah Gapp (St. Albert, Alta.) with 12 runs in a 12-0 drubbing of Shawnee State. Turns out it was way more than he needed as he tossed a complete game, allowing four hits, three walks while striking out six. He owns a 1.20 ERA with 93 K’s over 82 1/3 innings pitched in 2017. He is one start away from matching his 2016 total.

Manick makes three appearances
Jordan Manick (Aldergrove, BC) threw 4 1/3 innings over three games without allowing a run for McPherson College. He surrendered just two hits, a walk and struck out five. McPherson won two of the three games he appeared in.

Lantigua has double digit hits
Western Oklahoma State played seven games last weekend and John Lantigua (Quebec City, Que.) was ready for all of them. He went a strong 10-for-22 and swatted three home runs with 11 RBIs. He walked six times to reach a total of 16 times.

Kirkwood hits for Colby
Garrett Kirkwood (Calgary, Alta.) is hitting .417 so far in 2017 and added seven hits to his total last week. He didn’t waste any time getting it going either. In a 13-5 loss to Butler he went 3-for-4 with a two-run home run and a double. The next game he played he went 2-for-5 with a stolen base and wrapped it all up with a hit in each of the final two games.

Vickers whiffs 13 in victory
Garrett Kirkwood wasn’t the only Calgarian standout for Colby College this past week. Nick Vickers (Calgary, Alta.) picked up the win by tossing seven scoreless innings, giving up just one hit and walking five. He struck out 13 to move his record to 4-3.

Webb saves best game for last
Evan Webb (Whitby, Ont.) was a standout for Concord University. He went 9-for-15 in a four-game set with West Virginia Wesleyan. His best performance came in the final game, a 17-2 Concord win, where he went 4-for-4 with a walk and three RBIs. He also homered in Game 1.

Wark works five strong
He gave his team a chance to win. Jackson Wark tossed five innings, giving up three runs (one earned) on five hits, a walk and six strikeouts for St. Louis. It wasn’t enough, however, as Massachusetts walked away with a 5-4 win.

Galveston wins 2-of-3 against Baton Rouge
Kyle Ross (Maple Ridge, BC) threw four innings, allowing four runs (two earned) on three hits with two walks and six punch outs to pick up the win for Galveston College in Game 1 of their series. The game was bridged by Jesse Lee (Mississauga, Ont.) who threw two scoreless innings, allowing a hit and striking out three. He handed the ball to Kristjan Storrie (Langley, BC) who worked the ninth and picked up his seventh save of the season in the 9-7 win.
After their starter gave up seven runs in the first inning, Cooper Misic (Surrey, BC) came on in relief and tossed five innings, allowing an unearned run, on six hits, with four strikeouts and two walks in the 11-10 come from behind win. Storrie again picked up the save, which was his eighth of the season.

Wild game for Gauthier
Six innings, six runs and a win. That’s not exactly something you hear often. David Gauthier gave up six runs (one earned) over the six innings, giving up nine hits while walking and striking out four a piece for Trinidad Junior College. They were able to sweep their series with Western Nebraska despite making five errors in Gauthiers start.

Bedard and Dagenais back Gauthier, Trinidad State
Alex Bedard (Levis, Que.) went 4-for-6 with a RBI and a stolen base in a 12-7 win over Otero to start his week. He followed it up with five hits in their series with Western Nebraska.
Michel Dagenais (Longueuil, Que.) had had multiple hits in three of the five games last week, including a home run in Game 3 of their series with Western Nebraska.

Todoschuk solid despite tough season for McKendree
McKendree University isn’t exactly thriving in Great Lakes Valley Conference play, holding just a 1-15 record. It certainly isn’t because of Daniel Todoschuk (Stony Creek, Ont.). The Canadian tossed three scoreless, hitless innings with a pair of strikeouts and a walk in a 5-3 win over St. Louis. He later appeared against the University of Southern Indiana and went 2 1/3 innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits. He struck out three and walked one.

Thomas picks up win
Kyle Thomas (Mississauga, Ont.) picked up the win for No. 13 Northwestern Ohio over Madonna. He went 6 2/3 innings, surrendering six hits and one run with nine strikeouts and three walks.

Seven hits for Baker
Brenden Baker (Red Deer, Alta.) was another Canadian who found success in the early going of their team’s week. He went 3-for-4 with a walk, a RBI and two stolen bases in Siena Heights 5-4 loss to Adrian. He kept it going with four more hits in a three-game series with Cornerstone. Unfortunately for Siena Heights, they dropped all four games.

Wilcox tosses up zero’s
One hit is all that Southeastern got off of Illinois Central’s Zach Wilcox (London, Ont.) in two innings. He struck out two in his first appearance of the week. He then picked up the win over Danville Area by tossing 5 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing five hits and two walks with six strikeouts. He evened his record to 2-2.

Another hot start
Facing No. 1 Mercyhurst certainly didn’t intimidate Notre Dame’s (OH) Danny Beaver (Oakville, Ont.). He went 4-for-5 with a two-run home run in the 8-3 loss. He also stole a base against the nation’s best. He closed his weekend with another four hits, three RBIs and two stolen bases in a 14-0 win in Game 4 of their series with Fairmont State.

Walkoff for Marcus
David Marcus (Whitby, Ont.) provided the heroics for California University of Pennsylvania in Game 1 of their series with Gannon. Down 4-3 in the ninth he launched a three-run home run to propel his team to victory. It finished a 3-for-5 day at the plate. He had five other hits over the course of the week.

Acosta-Tapia continues terrific season
Christopher Acosta-Tapia (Deauville Laval, Que.) had three hits, two of which were doubles, two RBIs and a stolen base in Oklahoma Wesleyan’s first game of the week against Mid America Christian University, a 17-7 win. The Eagles then had a series with York College. In Game 1, Acosta-Tapia again went 3-for-4 with a home run in the 13-4 win. He stayed hot, crushing another home run in Game 3, a 11-0 win. He finished that game with a pair of hits and two RBIs. He closed out the series with a hit and two RBIs in an 8-2 win, completing the sweep. Oklahoma Wesleyan is now 39-8 and moved to No. 3 in the NAIA national polls. They get ready for a series at home with Friends University this week. Something is telling me they won’t be friendly hosts.

Tovell takes care of Millikan, Illinois Wesleyan
Another pitcher, another pair of appearances. It seems to be a common theme in this week’s column. Nathan Tovell (Calgary, Alta.) pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings against Millikan in Elmhurst’s 17-6 win. He allowed a hit and a walk while striking out three. He then got the start against Illinois Wesleyan and continued his success. He threw a complete game, scattering six hit and allowing only two runs over nine innings of work. He struck out three and walked three in the 7-2 win. The Freshman owns a 1-1 record and a 3.05 ERA.

Burgess has two similar outings
Marshal Burgess (Brandon, Man.) had a pair of stellar performances on the mound for the University of Jamestown. In a 6-5 win over Viterbo he went 2 2/3 scoreless innings, giving up a hit and a walk while striking out four. He got the call again in Game 2 of their series with No. 5 Bellevue. He went two innings, surrendering a hit with three punch outs. Not bad against some pretty stiff competition.

Stubberfield doesn’t allow an earned run
It was a tough series for Alabama A&M as they were swept by the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff. Owen Stubberfield (Georgetown, Ont.) threw two innings in Game 2, allowing two runs (none earned) on two hits with three strikeouts. He was summoned from the bullpen again in Game 3, this time throwing two scoreless innings, allowing a hit with three strikeouts.

Glaude keeps getting it done
David Glaude (Quebec City, Que.) had a 3-for-5 game with two RBIs for Missouri Western State in a 10-5 win over Northwest Missouri State. Next up was a series with Fort Hays State, a series Missouri Western State swept. In Game 1, Glaude had a hit, a walk, a RBI and swiped a base. Game 2 saw him going 4-for-4 with a two-run home run, a walk and three RBIs in total. In the final game of the series he went 2-for-5 with a RBI.

As the weeks go by, teams are getting closer to postseason play. It’s an exciting time around college baseball and Canadians continue to do big things. Check back next week to see what Week 13 of the BMOC has in store.
