The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and Dick Howser committee has decided on its semifinalists for the 2025 Dick Howser Trophy — awarded annually to the collegiate player of the year.
UC Santa Barbara Gauchos RHP Tyler Bremner, whose parents are from Mississauga, Ont. and Queensville, Ont., and Arkansas Razorbacks OF Charles Davalan are the two Canucks to make the 64-player list.
Bremner is one of 16 starting pitchers on the shortlist and one of three student-athletes playing in The Big West. He has been a strikeout machine this season, especially in the last month and a half. With six double-digit-strikeout hauls in his last seven starts, he has surged up the national leaderboard, ranking eighth in all of college baseball with 111 strikeouts and 17th nationally in strikeouts per nine innings at 12.92. Bremner became UC Santa Barbara’s all-time career strikeout record holder, and with 282 to his name and he could join the 300 club by the end of the season.

Davalan (St-Bruno-De-Montarville, Que.), meanwhile, has burst onto the scene in his first season as a Hog, hitting .353 with 11 doubles, a triple, 13 home runs and 54 RBIs in 54 games. He is tied for the lead in hits (82), second on the team in runs scored (63), homers (13) and total bases (134) and has a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage with a team-high four outfield assists.
The Dick Howser Trophy, presented by The Game Headwear, is given in memory of the former Florida State University All-America shortstop and major league player and manager who died of brain cancer in 1987. The trophy is regarded as baseball’s most prestigious award. Criteria for consideration of the trophy include performance on the field, leadership, moral character and courage – all qualities that were exemplified by Howser’s life. The trophy was first awarded in 1987 and has been awarded every year since (except 2020), making this its 38th year. Previous honorees include Todd Helton, Mark Prior, Stephen Strasburg and Kris Bryant. This year’s finalists will be announced on June 7, and the winner will be named on June 13.
