Brettell, Pop, two to watch in next two drafts

Zach Pop’s name has been mentioned once or twice on the scouting charts leading into the June draft.

RHP Pop (Brampton, Ont.) is ranked 46th over-all in the latest top 100 college juniors for the 2017 draft, according to the Perfect Game Scouting Service. The Kentucky Wildcat had already been listed 74th on Baseball America’s top 100 college list.

And Pop is not the only Canuck to make the PG lists as RHP Michael Brettell (Fonthill, Ont.) of the Central Michigan Chippewas is listed 95th on the top 100 sophomores, who are eligible in 2018. Zero Canucks made the top 50 freshmen or seniors list.

Brettell pitched four games last summer for the Kalamazoo Growlers of the Northwoods League. He was 2-1 with a 6.89 in four games walking 10 and striking out four in 15 2/3 innings. 

With CMU last spring he was 3-1 with one save and a 4.50 ERA in 19 games, making six starts. He walked 31 and fanned 33 in 48 innings.   

Brettell ranked third among the Chippewas with 19 appearances. He struck out a season-high six in five innings against Illinois State, earned his first career win over Oakland, struck out five in 4 1/3 innings for his second and gained his third win pitching 6 1/3 innings in 10-3 victory over Western Michigan in the MAC Tournament.

Selected to Tournament 12, he earned All-Tournament honors and pitched for the Canada Junior National Team. Brettell earned PG Preseason Canada/Puerto Rico Region Senior First Team honors.

This past summer on the Cape, Pop was 2-3, with a 4.45 ERA in nine games, making six starts for the Wareham Gateman. He walked 18, struck out 26 in 32 1/3 innings  to earn 27th spot on Baseball America’s list of the top 30 from the Cape.  

At Kentucky the former Ontatrio Blue Jay and Toronto Met, was 0-2, with a 5.21 ERA in 19 games, making six starts, walking 17 and fanning 24 in 38 innings.
