Official Laurier Golden Hawks Athletics News Release

WATERLOO, Ont. - Laurier Athletics and Recreation is pleased to announce Brodie Jeffery as the new head coach of the Golden Hawks baseball team.

Jeffery, an assistant coach with the team the past two seasons, takes over the reins from Scott Ballantyne, who recently announced his retirement from head coaching duties after 16 seasons. Over 456 games, Ballantyne led the Golden Hawks to an overall record of 285-171 and three OUA championships.

With Jeffery stepping into the role, the Golden Hawks will look to build on an 11-9 season cut short in the OUA West Regional Qualifier. The native of Whitby, Ont. has the pedigree to do just that, carrying an extensive resume in the OUA, with Team Ontario, and Team Canada.

"I am excited to welcome Brodie as the next head coach of our baseball program," said Ryan Lannan, associate director of Interuniversity Sport Programs. "The role he has played as an assistant coach over the past few years and his baseball pedigree makes him the ideal person to lead our student-athletes."

"Brodie's vision and culture align with the values of Laurier Athletics and Recreation. He will undoubtedly continue elevating the standard of excellence for which our baseball program is known. He believes in on-field development and success but, most importantly, creating the holistic environment to cultivate an exceptional student-athlete experience."

Before joining the Golden Hawks, Jeffery was the head coach of the Laurentian Voyageurs from 2018 to 2020. During that span, he was also the director of player development at the Baseball Academy in Sudbury.

He added the role of assistant coach with Team Canada's Sunbelt team (which represents Canada every year at The Sunbelt Tournament in McAlester, Okla.) and head coach of Team North at the 2019 Ontario Summer Games. That same year, he also served as an assistant coach with Team Ontario.

His collegiate playing career saw him become a gold-glove centre fielder from 2011 to 2013 at Wallace State Community College in Hanceville, Ala. After transferring, he finished at the former Martin Methodist College (now University of Tennessee Southern) in Pulaski, Tenn., where he started 84 games from 2013 to 2015.

"I'd like to thank Laurier Athletics and Recreation for allowing me to lead a program with such a strong tradition of winning on the field and in the classroom," said Jeffery. "The Golden Hawks athletic department has a clear vision for continued success and I am looking forward to being a part of it."

"Thank you to long-time head coach and good friend Scott Ballantyne for believing in me and trusting that I will continue to build on what he has built. I also want to thank my fiancée Michelle for always supporting my love and passion for the game of baseball."

Laurier's upcoming baseball season is set to begin in August 2023.
