Cade Smith among Guardians' eight non-roster invitees to MLB camp

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland Guardians have extended non-roster invitations to eight internal players to 2023 Major League Spring Training Camp.

The following eight players have been invited to Major League camp, bringing the non-roster total to 15:

RHP Cade Smith (23)

Posted a 4-2 mark with 13 saves and a 2.93 ERA in 44 relief outings (61 IP, 38H, 20ER, 99SO, 14.5 K/9, .178 average) between Akron and Columbus, leading organizational pitchers in saves (13) and was second in relief SO (99). Owns a two-year professional ERA of 3.36 in 77 relief outings (39ER/104 1/3 IP). The Abbotsford East, British Columbia native was signed by Cleveland as a non-drafted free agent in June 2020 out of the university of Hawaii (the 2020 draft was just five rounds).

LHP Logan T. Allen (24)

Cleveland’s second round pick in the 2020 MLB Draft out of Florida International, enters 2023 as the sixth-rated prospect in the system (Baseball America). Went a combined 9-7 with a 4.75 ERA in 2022 between AA Akron and AAA Columbus (70ER/132.2IP), leading the system in strikeouts (177, third-most in MiLB) and was second in IP. Has fanned 320 in 244.0 career Minor League innings.

RHP Peyton Battenfield (25)

Acquired from Tampa Bay at 2021 trading deadline for OF Jordan Luplow. Went 8-6 with a 3.63 ERA in 28 starts in 2022 at AAA Columbus (62ER/153.2IP), leading the organization and Int’l League in innings (fourth-most in MiLB). Was on the Major League roster last season while the team was in Canada playing Toronto, Aug. 12-14, but did not pitch. Originally drafted by Houston in the ninth round of the 2019 MLB Draft out of Oklahoma State.

RHP Nick Mikolajchak (25)

The 2022 NRI was Cleveland’s 11th round pick in the 2019 draft out of Sam Houston State. The Spring, Texas native went 5-2 with a 3.04 ERA in 47 relief appearances in 2022 at Columbus (17ER/50.1IP), allowing just 3 homers on the year while fanning 50 in 50.0 innings.

LHP Andrew Misiaszek (25)

32nd round pick by Cleveland in 2019 out of Northeastern, where he was teammates with Aaron Civale as a freshman. Went a combined 5-2 with a 2.04 ERA in 42 appearances/3 starts in 2022 between Akron and Columbus (14ER/61.2IP). Owns a professional ERA of 3.03 in 91 outings (51ER/151.1IP/207SO).

RHP Luis Oviedo (23)

Claimed on waivers from Pittsburgh last April 26, split season between four different stops in the Pirates and Guardians organizations (5.43 ERA, 28G/9GS, 36ER/59 2/3 IP). Returns to the organization, spending the first five years (2016-20) of his career in the Player Development system prior to his December 2020 Rule 5 Draft selection by Pittsburgh. Split the 2021 season between Pittsburgh’s ML roster and the IL.

C/INF David Fry (27)

Spent entire season in triple-A Columbus, finishing tied for 4th in the organization in doubles (27) and RBI (74). Led Columbus in homers (tied with Will Benson) and RBI. Appeared in 63 games at third base (60GS), 38 games at first base (33GS), 12 games at catcher (11GS) and made 9 starts at DH and was named an organizational All-Star (MLB.com). Was named a Rising Stars team in the Arizona Fall League after the season (.286, 13G, 12-for-42, 8 RBI). Acquired from Milwaukee on March 13, 2022 to complete previous Nov. 2021 trade that sent RHP J.C. Mejia to the Brewers. Originally selected by Milwaukee in the seventh round of the 2018 MLB Draft out of Northwestern State.

1B Micah Pries (24)

Spent entire season at double-A Akron, leading the club in homers and RBIs on his way to organizational All-Star honors (MLB.com). On the year, he batted .266 (119-for-448) with 29 2B, 5 3B, 18 HR and 73 RBIs in 122 games. Was selected by Cleveland in the 13th round of the 2019 MLB Draft out of Point Loma Nazarene University (SD, CA). Finished 3rd in the system in doubles (29) and was 6th in HR (18), OPS (.814) and RBIs (73) and was named Eastern League player of the month for June
