CHITRÉ, Panama – USA took advantage of some early Canadian defensive miscues and had 13 hits to hand the Junior National Team an 11-2 loss at the COPABE U18 Pan Am Championships.

The loss puts Canada’s Super Round record at 2-1 with a match-up against host Panama set for Friday and a contest against the Dominican Republic on Saturday before bronze and gold medal games take place on Sunday.

Canada starting pitcher Connor O’Halloran (Mississauga, Ont.) got into trouble early loading the bases on an error, walk and single before a fielder’s choice brought in one run while an error on the play by first baseman Cesar Valero (Calgary, Alta.) scored another. Former Blue Jays LHP Al Leiter was on hand as his son pitches for Team USA.

The Americans used five hits in the second inning including a two-run single and an RBI double off the bat of Riley Greene to score four more runs and chase O’Halloran from the game.

Connor Sparks (Saskatoon, Sask.) took over for O’Halloran and ate up some valuable innings on the mound blanking the Americans for four innings before they scored four times with two out in the sixth including a two-run homer to go up by 10.

Tyler McWillie (Watrous, Sask.) registered four strikeouts working 2 2/3 innings in relief of Sparks.

Offensively, USA starter Avery Short held Canada off the scoreboard for six innings before Denzel Clarke (Pickering, Ont.) reached on a fielder’s choice in the seventh and eventually came around to score on a wild pitch while Dasan Brown (Oakville, Ont.) doubled home Blake Buckle (Milton, Ont.) later in the inning.

UP NEXT: Canada will continue Super Round play tomorrow against host Panama at Rico Cedeño Stadium in Chitré with the first pitch set for 6PM ET … RHP Theo Millas (Burnaby, BC) is scheduled to get the start on the mound … Fans can watch live via the following link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VkBfrnJthOc
