Official Quebec Capitales News Release

The Quebec Capitales have hired Jonathan de Marte to be their pitching coach.

de Marte was a right-handed pitcher for the Capitales in 2019. That season, he posted a 2.23 ERA in 35 relief appearances.

In February 2020, de Marte signed a minor league contract with the Chicago Cubs, but he was unable to play due to the COVID-19 pandemic and was released in March 2021.

That same year, he took advantage of his dual U.S./Israeli citizenship so he could pitch for Team Israel and help them carve out a spot at the Tokyo Olympics.

"I started feeling shoulder pain as I prepared for spring training 2021 with the Cubs," de Marte said. "Once I mentioned to the Cubs my shoulder discomfort, I was released and started an aggressive rehabilitation to be ready for Tokyo."

"I played two games in Tokyo – one against the United States and one against Korea. I pitched an inning without allowing a run against Korea. I allowed one or two against the United States, but I don't remember if they were earned."

For Capitales manager Patrick Scalabrini, de Marte’s presence is a big plus for the 2022 season.

"Jonathan is above all a quality human being, but also a player who brings an exemplary work ethic to the dressing room. He's an avid baseball student and I can't wait to see the impact on our pitchers in a few months."

For his part, de Marte, a native of the city of White Plains, N.Y., intends to use his personal experience in his new role within the club.

"For the past few years, I have had the opportunity to teach players of all ages and I believe it is important to establish an open line of communication with everyone so that they can feel comfortable approaching me at any time. I am proud to lead by example and believe that my patience, willingness to learn and accessibility will have a positive impact on the Capitales."
