CBN Player of the Month - Jamie Romak
By George Farelli
Canadian Baseball Network
If you are a Canadian and a hitter, September is the month to be born.
Like former Etobicoke Ranger 1B Joey Votto (Etobicoke, Ont.) born Sept. 10, the same day as slugger Roger Maris.
Or former National League rookie of the year OF Jason Bay (Trail, BC), born Sept. 20.
INF Danny Klassen (Leamington, Ont.), who played for the expansion Arizona Diamondbacks and was born Sept. 22.
1B Tom Burgess (London, Ont.) of the California Angels and Joe Erautt (Vibank, Sask.) of the Chicago White Sox were both born Sept. 1.
Plus some early Canucks such as Joe Knight (Port Stanley, Ont. of the Cincinnati Reds, born Sept. 28 and INF Jimmy Knowles (Toronto, Ont.) of the Washington Nationals born Sept. 5.
And then there is Jamie Romak (London, Ont.) born Sept. 30, 1985. Romak was the 242nd Canadian to play in the majors, one behind his pal OF Jim Adduci (Burnaby, BC) and ahead of OF Dalton Pompey (Mississauga, Ont.).
Playing for the SK Wyerns in the Korean League, Romak celebrated his birthday with a pair of doubles in an 8-6 win over the Kiwoom Heros.
Since our last look at Canadians playing in foreign lands, Romak has hit six homers and 13 RBIs. The efforts earned Romak Canadian Baseball Network player of the month honours.
How the month went for the former London Badger, top Canadian drafted in 2003, who was scouted and signed by Lonnie Goldberg, when he was living in Guelph. He went
_ 2-for-8 with a solo homer as Wyverns dropped a two-game series against the LG Twins.
_ 3-for-6 in a two-game birthday set against Kiwoom which was split as he had three doubles.
_ 2-for-8 with two doubles splitting a two-game series against the Samsung Lions.
_ 1-for-3 in a loss to the NC Dinos.
_ 3-for-9 in a three-game series against Kiwoom, with a solo homer to help SK take two of three.
_ 3-for-8 facing the Doosan Bears with a pair of doubles as they dropped two of three.
_ 5-for-12 against the Kia Tigers with a double, two homers and five RBIs, as SK won two of three.
_ 4-for-8 hitting off Samsung pitching with two doubles, two homers -- including his 30th homer -- and knocking in six. Wyverns is not 47-87-1 to sit 33 1/2 games behind NC Dinos.
If you are counting along at home that is seasons of 31 homers in 2017, 43 in 2018, 29 last year and 30 this year ... for a total of 133 homers in four years (an average of 33.3).
