CBN POW, Week IX: Cal Quantrill
By George Farelli
Canadian Baseball Network
As the late, great Foster Hewitt used to say “well fans, the score was not indicative of play.”
Such was the case when the San Antonio Missions visited the Springfield Cardinals before 6,967 fans at Hammons Field in double-A Texas League play.
RHP Cal Quantrill (Port Hope, Ont.) pitched seven scoreless, leaving with a 1-0 San Antonio lead over Springfield. The Missons went on a 6-0 win, thanks to a four-run eighth and a one-run ninth.
So, Quantrill had little breathing room in his 97-pitch outing which consisted of 62 strikes, which is why he is the Canadian Baseball Network minor league Player of the Week for Week IX.
Quantrill allowed one hit and walked one while putting up his seven zeros. He struck out 10, which included: Stefan Trosclair swinging in the first; Blake Drake swinging, Thomas Spitz swinging and Matt Pearce looking in the third; Evan Mendoza swinging in the fourth; Spitz swinging aand pinch-hitter Granden Goetzman swinging in the fifth; re-habbing Yadier Molina swinging in the sixth; Edmundo Sosa swinging and Spitz looking in the seventh
He also retired Molina on a pop out in the first and a fly ball in the fourth,
Rowan Wick (North Vancouver, BC) pitched a scoreless eighth, allowing a single while striking out a pair.
Josh Naylor (Mississauga, Ont.) singled, walked and was hit by a pitch
Highlight of the Week _ 3B Vladimir Guerrero (Montreal, Que.) Named by MLB as double-A Eastern League Player of the Month for May with New Hampshire in May, In 28 games he batted .440 with 28 runs scored, nine Home runs, 28 RBIs, a .780 slugging mark and a .484 on-base mark.
