The Gwinnett Stripers owned a one-run lead through the first six innings but surrendered three runs in the final three innings in a 5-3 loss to the Durham Bulls before 6,034 fans at Coolray Field.

Durham was losing 3-2 when Trevor Brigden (North York, Ont.) took the mound. He pitched two scoreless and wound up with the win -- his first at triple-A after being promoted -- as well as being named Canadian Baseball Network minor leaguer Player of the Week for Week XXIV.

How the seventh inning went: a strike out swinging, a strike out on a foul tip and then former Blue Jays 2B Ryan Goins lined out to the right fielder.

And in the eighth, he hit former Blue Jays draft pick Jake Marisnick, the lead-off hitter. Marisnick stole second on the first pitch. Brigden recorded the first out on a strike three looking and then got the second out on a swinging strike out. The final out of the eighth, was a pop up in foul ground.

Bridgen was at Lackawanna Junior College in 2015-16 and then moved on to Okanagan College in 2018-19. A tweet by coach Jared Johnson showing Bridgen’s fastball clocked 94 MPH caused quite a stir in the scouting world. Scouts from the Twins, Pirates, Royals, Blue Jays and the Red Sox contacted either him or his coaches.

Tampa Bay selected Bridgen in the 17th round of the 2019 draft after Bridgen went 6-0 with a 2.00 ERA in seven games -- five starts -- walking 11 and striking out 64.

Trevor Brigden was selected in the 17th round of the 2019 draft by Tampa Bay Rays, and the native of North York, Ont. is currently in his third season as a pro. He has enjoyed a successful 2022 season, the majority of which was spent with Montgomery Biscuits in the double A Southern League. In September, he was rewarded by the Rays with a promotion to their triple A affiliate, Durham Bulls in the International League, and this week he made his second game appearance with the Bulls and it was a very good one.

In a 5-3 win over the Gwinnett Braves, he pitched two scoreless innings in relief, allowing zero hits while striking out four batters, and it resulted in his first win at the triple-A level. His record with Durham is 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA and for the full season, including his stint with Montgomery, in a total of 34 games, now stands at 5-5 with three saves and a 2.78 ERA. He has struck out 76 in 55 innings.

Highlights: Congratulations are due to the Quebec Capitales who won the IND 2022 Frontier League championship on Sunday, in an exciting final against Schaumburg Boomers.
