CBN POW, Week XI: Andrew Yerzy

Toronto Mets grad C Andrew Yerzy (Toronto, Ont.) is off to a fast start with the class-A Hillsboro Hops.

Andrew Yerzy hopped to it as the class-A Hillsboro Hops began their season.

Yerzy (Toronto, Ont.) a Toronto Mets grad had the highest average of the Canucks competing in the minors. That number took a jump as the short-season leagues like the class-A Northwest League began play.

The former Toronto Met batted .375 (6-for-16) with a home run and four RBIs to earn Canadian Baseball Network minor league Player of the Week honors for Week XI. He was drafted by scout Doug Mathieson (Aldergrove, BC) of the Arizona Diamondbacks in the second round in 2016 (going 52nd over all). 

How the week that was went for Yerzy:

_ Catching and batting fourth, he went 3-for-4 with a double as Hillsboro beat the Everett AquaSox 5-2 on opening night before 4,003 at Everett Memorial Stadium. Yerzy singled on a line drive to centre in the third, singled to centre in the fifth and doubled on a line drive to right.

_ Battling clean-up and catching, he had a hits and drove in three games as Hillsboro knocked off Everett 12-6 before 3,589 fans. On his second time up in the first, Yerzy hit a bases-clearing double to left field in a 12-run first. Wowser! 

_ Catching and batting fourth, he homered as Hillsboro lost to Everett 7-1 before 1,710 fans. With two out in the fourth, Yerzy homered to left off RHP Jheyson Caraballo evening the score at 1-1, 

_ Battting clean-up and catching, he doubled as Hillsboro lost 7-5 to Everett in front of 1,803 fans. Yerzy doubled to centre and scored in the second inning.

Drafted out of the University of Kentucky by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2017, Zach Pop (Brampton, Ont.) is gaining some valuable experience pitching out of the bullpen for Rancho Cucamonga, their Single-A affiliate in the California League. This week he made two spotless relief appearances, the first on June 13th in a 4-3 win over Lake Elsinore Storm when he tossed one scoreless inning, allowing zero hits to pick up his third save.  On June 15 in a 3-0 win over Inland Empire 66’ers he pitched another scoreless inning, without giving up a base hit while striking out one Inland Empire hitter, to earn his second save of the week.  His record with the Quakes in 12  relief appearances, now stands at 0-0 with four saves and a 0.50 ERA.

At only 23 years of age, Brock Dykxhoorn (Goderich, Ont.) has made quick progress within the Houston Astros minor league system, and is now pitching very well with the Fresno Grizzlies the triple-A affiliate in the Pacific Coast League.  This week he made two excellent starts, the first was on June 13 in a 9-2 win over New Orleans Baby Cakes when he pitched 6 2/3 innings, gave up two base hits and one earned run while striking out nine New Orleans hitters, to pick up his first win of the season for Fresno.  On June 19 in a 5-3 victory over Round Rock Express he tossed seven innings, surrendered four base hits and two earned runs while striking out eight Round Rock batters, to earn up his second win of the week. His record with Fresno in five appearances now stands at 2-0 with a 2.35 ERA and overall, including eight games with Corpus Christi Hooks in the Double A Texas League, is now 4-0 with a 2.81 ERA.

Maintaining his string of consistent starts for San Antonio, Cal Quantrill (Port Hope, Ont.) had two very good outings this week, including his fourth win in a row, and another which resulted in a no decision. On June 14 in a 2-1 win over Frisco Roughriders he pitched seven innings, gave up seven base hits and only one earned run while striking out seven Frisco hitters, to pick up the win. On June 19th in a 9-6 loss to Corpus Christi Hooks he threw five innings, surrendered six base hits and four earned runs while striking out six Corpus Christi batters, but was not involved in the decision.   His overall record with the Missions in 15 appearances now stands at 6-3 with a 4.14 ERA.
