By George Farelli

Canadian Baseball Network

The province of Nova Scotia is not known as a baseball hotbed.

Well, except when the Boston Red Sox win a World Series and bring the trophy north so that their loyal fans can get a look.

Entering this draft the last Nova Scotia player to pitch in the majors was Vince Horsman (Halifax, NS) who was signed by the Toronto Blue Jays in 1984 and finished his five-year major league career with the 1995 Minnesota Twins.

That all changed this June when the New York Yankees chose OF Jake Sanford (Cole Harbour, N.S.) from Western Kentucky Hilltoppers in the third round where he earned the nickname Nova. He was he top college player Canadian selected and the second over all.

Sanford didn’t have the highest average this week, but he had the most hits among the 100 Canadians as he batted .400 (10-for-25) with two RBIs. The week earned him Canadian Baseball Network minor league Player of the Week for Week XIII.

Philiippe Aumont made another excellent start for Ottawa this week on July 2nd in an interlocking game versus Shikoku Island, which the Champions won 6-3. He pitched seven innings gave up six base hits and two earned runs while striking out nine, to earn his fifth win of the season. His overall Can Am league record in nine starts, now stands at 5-2 with a 2.38 ERA.

DUSTIN MOLLEKEN RHP - IND QUEBEC CAPITALES

1 2.2 - - - 2 1 1-0 - 0.91 0.00

Despite the fact that as a team Quebec has struggled this season, the same cannot be said for Dustin Molleken, because he has pitched consistently well out of the Capitales bullpen since Day 1. This 34 year old veteran from Regina, Sask. has proven to be a wise free agent signing during the past off season, and this week Molleken had two more very good outings. The first was on June 30 in a 4-3 interlock victory over Shikoku Island when he pitched one inning, gave up one hit and one earned run while striking out one Shikoku batter, to earn his second win of the season. On July 2 in a 10-5 win over New Jersey Jackals he threw two innings, scattered five base hits and surrendered one earned run, and was credited with his second save of the year. His overall record with Quebec in 14 Can Am League relief appearances, is now 2-0, with five saves and a 1.90 ERA.
