Garrett Hawkins was selected by San Diego Padres in the ninth round of the 2021 draft, from the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds, and the 21-year-old native of Biggar, Sask. is already beginning to show the potential Padres scouts saw in him. He had an excellent week with two solid relief appearances each of which resulted in a win. On Sept. 9 in a 3-0 shutout win over ACL Royals - Gold he pitched three scoreless innings, allowing two base hits and while striking out six Royals hitters, to earn his second win of the season. He followed that on Sept. 14 in a 9-4 victory over ACL Athletics again throwing three scoreless, surrendering two hits while striking out six Athletics for his second win of the week and third of the season. His record with the ACL Padres in seven Rookie Arizona Complex League appearances, now stands at 3-1 with a 2.35 ERA.

Despite the inherent difficulties in making the adjustment to his first full season at the double-A level, Jordan Balazovic has had a consistent season pitching for the Wind Surge in 2021. This week the Mississauga, Ont. native had an excellent start on Sept. 10 in a 5-3 win over Northwest Arkansas Naturals, when he pitched six hitless innings allowing zero runs, while striking out five Naturals batters, to earn his fifth win of the season. Unfortunately, his teammates could not finish off the no-hitter but getting the win was his reward. He improved his record with Wichita in 19 double-A starts to 5-4 with a 3.38 ERA.
