CBN POW Week XXII Jared Young, plus moves

INF Jared Young (Prince George, BC) went 11-for- 19 (.579) with eight RBIs to win CBN Player of the Week honours.

Jared Young had a heck of a night playing second base for the class-A Eugene Emeralds when he had four hits, including a double, in a 10-5 loss to the Everett AquaSox.  

But that was last week. 

Missed it by that much.

But then the next week began and everything old was Young again as Young earned Caned Baseball Network Player of the Week for Week XXII. 

How the week that was for Young (Prince George, BC) home of former Blue Jays bright mind Stephen Brooks.

_ Played shortstop and hitting second, he had four hits in five at-bats as Eugene beat Everett 12-0 before 3,013 fans at Everett Memorial Stadium. Young lined out to left in the first, hit a line-drive home to right centre in the third for a 2-0 lead, singled to right in a run in the four-run fifth, singled to right in the four-run sixth and in the eighth hit his fifth double, this one to centre.

_ Batting second and playing second, Young had a pair of hits in a 12-4 win over the
Salem-Keizer Volcanoes before 2,474 at Volcanoes Stadium. Young singled on a line drive to right in the third and singled to right in the seventh to knock in a run in the six-run explosion. He went 2-for-5 on the night.

_ Batting second and playing second, Young was 4-for-5 in an 8-3 win against Salem-Keizer in front of 2,195 at Volcanoes Stadium. He singled to right in the first, hit a two-run single to centre in the fifth, singled to centre in the seventh knocking in two and doubled to right to knock in a run in the ninth. All in all, he finished with a five RBI-night.

_ Hitting in the No. 2 hole and playing second, he was 1-for-4  in an 11-1 loss to Salem-Keizer before 2,855 at Volcanoes Stadium. He singled to left in the eighth.

Young was selected in the 15th round this June by the Chicago Cubs and scout Billy Swoope from Old Dominion. Originally he played at Minot State and Connors State before moving to Old Dominion. 

This spring he batted .367 with 19 doubles, four triples, seven homers and 34 RBIs with an 1.021 OPS in 58 games. Young led the Monarchs in 11 offensive categories, including average (.367), triples (four), home runs (7), runs (57), stolen bases (9) and OPS (1.021).

Daniel Procopio was selected by the Los Angeles Angels in the 10th Round of the 2017 Draft, and assigned to Orem Owlz in the Rookie Class Pioneer League. This week he had two excellent outings, the first on Sept. 1st in a 10-4 win over Ogden Raptors when he threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings, gave up two base hits and while striking out four Ogden batters to pick up his second with of the season. On Sept. 5th in a 3-1 victory over Idaho Falls Chukars he pitched two scoreless, surrendered one base hit while striking out five Idaho Falls batters to earn his third Save of the year. These two outings improved his record in sixteen appearances for Orem to 2-2, 3 Saves and a 2.49 ERA.

Austin Shields made only one appearance this week, it was on Aug. 30th in a 3-2 win over the Gulf Coast Tigers - East when he pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings, gave up no base hits while striking out two Tigers hitters to earn his fourth win of the season. This outing improved his Gulf Coast League record in 12 appearances for the Pirates, to 4-1 with a
4.43 ERA.

Although he was drafted by the Chicago White Sox in 2016, this is Bryan Saucedo’s first year as an active player and now pitching for their affiliate in the Rookie Class Arizona League. The 23 year old Toronto native made one start this week on Sept. 2nd in a 9-3 win over the GCL Dodgers and pitched five innings, he gave up three base hits and two earned runs while striking out five Dodger batters to earn his third win of the season. This result improved his record with the White Sox in 13 games to 3-2 with a 7.04 ERA.

Karl Gelinas is a 34 year old veteran pitching in his 11th season with the Quebec Capitales in the IND Can Am League, and as was the case in every one of them, he’s proving to be a reliable top of the rotation starter. This week on Sept. 2nd in a 2-0 combined shutout of the New Jersey Jackals he pitched 7 2/3 scoreless, gave up four base hits, while striking out eight New Jersey hitters, to earn his ninth win of the season. This start improved his Can Am League record in 20 appearances with Quebec, to 9-3 with a 3.27 ERA.
