COBA Major Week XVII belongs to Erindale
COBA Major Week XVII Recap
By Dan Estey
The Erindale Cardinals had a light week in COBA Major League action as they wrapped up their regular season at home as they entertained the Etobicoke Rangers. A lot of players saw the field in this contest for both sides as both teams were preparing playoff tournament.
The Cards would open the scoring in this game as they cashed a runner with two outs in the first inning for a 1-0 lead. The lead, though, would be short lived as the Rangers plated a pair of runs in the third to take a 2-1 lead.
The middle innings saw the bats wake up for both teams as Etobicoke scored another run in the fourth to extend their lead to 3-1. Erindale, however, would score three runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 4-3 lead. The Rangers answered back again though plating four runs in the fifth for a 7-4 lead.
The Cardinals would get one back in the home half of the 5th inning followed by the teams trading runs in the sixth giving Etobicoke an 8-6 lead after six. Erindale would chip away in the late inning though as they scored a run in both the seventh and then the ninth to tie the game and force extra innings.
In the extra frame, Etobicoke would get a run to retake the lead again 9-8. Erindale battled against the Etobicoke reliever though as they got runners to second and third with one out. The next batter hit a chopper back to the pitcher who promptly over threw the catcher allowing both runners to score and give Erindale the comeback 10-9 win.
Aaron Palmer led the Cardinals at the dish going 3-for-6 with a pair of runs while John Amendola was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored as well. Zach Marriott was 2-for-3 with an RBI while Adrian Butrimas was 1-for-2 with a run and two RBI. Micheal Ferracuti led the way for Etobicoke going 3-for-6 with a home run, a triple, an RBI and three runs scored.
Lots of pitchers got work in on both sides in this one as Erindale rolled out seven arms in this game. Evan Harrison made his final appearance of the year before heading back to school in the US. He went three innings allowing two runs on two hits while striking out three. Zach Bayfield followed him to the mound for an inning allowing one run on one hit. He hit a batter and issued a walk.
Mark Taplin followed him throwing 1/3 of an inning allowing four runs on 6 hits. Dan Nauth came in to clean up that inning for Taplin and threw another inning allowing a run on a pair of hits. He had one walk while striking out two.
Sebastian Santos had a clean inning of work allowing two hits and striking out one while Adam Forsey also had a clean inning striking out one. Dan Estey, who grabbed the win, threw the last two innings allowing an unearned run on no hits while striking out three. Tyler Whealy, fifth pitcher of the night for Etobicoke, took the tough loss.
