COBA Week XV - Oakville's Walton helps A's get Big W

Former Ontario Blue Jays RHP Marc Walton pitched three innings allowing three runs -- one earned -- on five hits.

COBA Major Week 15 Recap

By Dan Estey

The Oakville A’s had a light week in league play as they won their only game of the week while their other contest was wiped out due to rain and wet field conditions. Their week was supposed to open in Niagara on Thursday evening, but heavy rains and thunder forced the cancellation of the game.

On Friday, the A’s returned the favour hosting the Metros at Oakville Park. Niagara opened the scoring in this game as they plated a pair of runs in the second inning and added another in the third for an early 3-0 lead. Oakville responded in the bottom half of the inning as they added a run of their own to cut the lead to 3-1.

Niagara extended their lead in the 5th inning as they cashed three runs to take a 6-1 lead. The A’s kept battling though as they scored three runs of their own to cut the deficit to 6-4. Niagara kept adding on though as they added a run in the sixth but Oakville had a big inning scoring four runs to take an 8-7 lead.

The A’s kept their foot on the gas pedal as they held the Metros scoreless the rest of the way and plated three more runs and made that stand for a tough 11-7 victory.

Dan Beaver led the 10-hit Oakville attack going 1-for-2 with a pair of walks, two runs and three RBIs. Ryan Freemantle was 2-for-5 with a double, a run and an RBI while Brendan Callaghan was also 2-for-5 with a run scored. Matt Reagan was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs and an RBI. Vic Christiansen, Mitchell Over and Luke Whitehouse all collected a hit to round out the A’s offense.

Veteran hurler Marc Walton drew the start on the mound and went three innings allowing three runs -- one earned -- on five hits. Matt Chisamore threw the next two innings allowing three runs -- all unearned -- on two hits. He walked one while striking out three. Peter Zytner, who collected the win, also threw two innings allowing one unearned run on one hit while striking out four Metros batters. Curtis Braun closed out the 9th with a clean inning allowing a hit while striking out one.
