The Chicago Cubs have placed RHP Rowan Wick (North Vancouver, B.C.) on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to September 17) with a left oblique strain.

According to Cubs manager David Ross, the Junior National National Team and Vancouver Cannons alum’s injury flared up in Wick's appearance on Wednesday when the 27-year-old right-hander tossed a scoreless inning in the club’s 3-2 victory over the Cleveland Indians.

Ross said the injury is potentially season-ending.

"Row (Wick) has been a big part of that bullpen [since] the second half of last year and what he's done for us this year,” Ross told reporters on Saturday. “He's been a lock-down guy in any part on the back-end of games, and has thrown really well. So, yeah, it's a huge loss."

Wick had been back on track in September after a rough final two weeks of August. The hard-throwing reliever has allowed just one run in eight September outings and his ERA has dropped from 5.00 (on August 26) to 3.12.

Last season, Wick made 31 big league appearances and recorded a 2.43 ERA while striking out 35 batters. The 6-foot-3 righty is a converted catcher who made his big league debut with the San Diego Padres in 2018.

The Cubs activated left-hander Andrew Chafin off the 10-day injured list on Saturday to take Wick’s place on the roster.

The 30-year-old Chafin was acquired on August 31 from the Arizona Diamondbacks and owns a career 10-12 record with a 3.68 ERA in 337 major league appearances over the last seven seasons. He had been sidelined with a left finger sprain.
