CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today placed infielder Nick Madrigal on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to Sept. 17) with a right hamstring strain and recalled infielder Jared Young from triple-A Iowa.
Young (Prince George, B.C.), 28, has hit .310 (96-for-310) with 16 doubles, two triples, 21 home runs and 72 RBIs in 90 games for Iowa this season, collecting 50 walks to contribute to a .995 OPS. In his last 17 games since August 29, he has a .369 average (24-for-65) with five doubles, one triple, eight home runs, 20 RBIs and a 1.321 OPS.
The left-handed hitter begins his second stint with the Cubs this season as he batted .171 (6-for-35) with two triples, a home run, five RBIs and two stolen bases in 13 games from June 27-July 22. Young made his major league debut with Chicago last season and has appeared in 19 major league games with a .204 average (11-for-54) while appearing at first base (14 games), designated hitter (four games) and right field (one game).
Selected by Chicago in the 15th round of the 2017 First-Year Player Draft out of Old Dominion University, Young is a career .269 (539-for-2,007) hitter with 98 doubles, 16 triples, 69 home runs and 319 RBIs in 553 career minor league games spanning six seasons. He was the Cubs Minor League Player of the Year in 2018, combining to hit .300 (134-for-477) with an .842 OPS in 120 games between Single-A South Bend and Myrtle Beach.
Madrigal, 26, has hit .263 (71-for-270) with 16 doubles, one triple, two home runs, 28 RBIs and 10 stolen bases in 92 games for Chicago this season.
