Medicine Hat, AB – A four-run first inning from the Medicine Hat Mavericks proved to be too much for the Okotoks Dawgs to overcome, as the league leaders were defeated 8-2 on Wednesday night.

The Dawgs’ five-game winning streak was also snapped with the loss.

After allowing four runs in the first inning, Dawgs hurler Jared Spearing settled down to toss four scoreless innings.

His counterpart, Mavericks pitcher Garret Nicholson, did not allow a hit until the sixth inning and the Dawgs had just three hits in the contest.

The Mavs scored their fifth run on an error in the sixth inning, before the Dawgs plated two runs in the top of the seventh on RBIs from Tristan Peters and Kory Longaker. But any hopes of a Dawgs’ comeback were dashed when Minot State infielder Sal Rodriguez belted a three-run home run for the Mavs in the bottom of the frame.

The Dawgs will now focus their attention on a three-game road trip in Fort McMurray, which will start on Friday.
