The Okotoks Dawgs split their doubleheader with the Edmonton Prospects on Saturday at Seaman Stadium.

They lost the first game 5-4, but rallied to win the second, 6-2.

With the split, the Dawgs’ record is 25-6 and they are now tied with the Sylvan Lake Gulls atop the Western Canadian Baseball League’s West Division standings.

The first game on Saturday was scheduled to be a seven-inning make-up game for a rainout earlier this season but it went into extra innings and the Prospects registered a walk-off win in the bottom of the eighth.

Aidan Rose (Calgary, Alta.) was the star of the Dawgs’ offence in the first game, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Jarrett Burney (Reinhardt University) also had two hits, while Tucker Zdunich (High River, Alta.) and Lou Anderson (Montreal, Que.) each added a hit and an RBI.

On the mound, Zane Morrison (Campbellsville University) started and allowed two runs in 3 2/3 innings before he was relieved by Cade Herrmann (Bellevue University) and Trent Warstler (Emporia State) who tossed a combined 2 1/3 scoreless innings. The Prospects scored the game-winning run off Aaron Hammer (Campbellsville University) in the bottom of the eighth inning.

In the second game, Zdunich had three hits - including a two-run home run - to lead the Dawgs to a 6-2 win. Left fielder Kadyn Williams (Pittsburgh State) also had two hits and an RBI in the victory.

Right-hander Greg Ross (Sarnia, Ont.) was excellent in his start for the Dawgs, limiting the Prospects to one run on three hits in five innings to earn the win. Chase Tucker (St. Johns, Nfld.), Garrett Maloney (Campbellsville University), and Easton Corey (Linn-Benton CC) all tossed scoreless innings in relief for the Dawgs.

The Dawgs will now hit the road to take on the Lethbridge Bulls on Sunday.

They will then return to Seaman Stadium on Thursday to battle the Sylvan Lake Gulls.
