Okotoks, AB - The Okotoks Dawgs picked up their second straight win against the Eastern Division-leading Weyburn Beavers with an 8-4 victory on Tuesday night.
Lewis-Clark State right-hander Justin Hammergren, who had made three previous road starts for the Dawgs, made his first home start at Seaman Stadium. The Tucson, Ariz., senior pitched six strong innings, giving up only two runs and on three hits to secure his third win of the season.
Hammergren did not give up a hit until the fifth inning while the Dawgs took four innings to find the scoreboard.
Catcher Gavin Logan’s two-run RBI double in the bottom of the fourth opened the scoring for the Dawgs. He eventually moved to third base and scored when teammate and Thompson Rivers second baseman Liam Rihela safely swiped second base
With the score 3-0 in the fifth, a long single ripped to the warning track by UBC infielder Jaxon Valcke scored Richard Mascarenas.
The Beavers tallied two runs off Hammergren in the sixth inning to make it a 4-2 game, but the Dawgs answered with two runs - one from an RBI double by Tristan Peters - of their own in the bottom half of the frame.
A sacrifice fly from Liam Rihela in the seventh inning pushed the score to 7-2 before Weyburn scored a run in the top of the eighth. The Dawgs once again replied with a run in the bottom of the inning. Weyburn would add one more run in the ninth.
The series finale will take place on Wednesday night with the opening pitch set for 7:05 p.m.
