The Okotoks Dawgs faced the Fort McMurray Giants in two make-up games from Father’s Day weekend on Sunday.
To start off, the two teams played the last two innings that were rained out on Father’s Day. The Dawgs fought hard but eventually lost 9-8 in extra innings.
The Dawgs rebounded for a 7-4 win over the Giants in the second game that was originally scheduled for June 15.
With the split on Sunday, the Dawgs are now 31-12 on the season and sit two games back of the Sylvan Lake Gulls in the Western Canadian Baseball League’s Western Division standings.
Spencer Sullivan (Linn-Benton CC) was a standout for the Dawgs offensively in the second game, going 2-for-3 with a two-run home run in the second inning. Caleb Lumbard (Regina, Sask.) followed with a two-run home run of his own in the seventh.
Aidan Rose (Calgary, Alta.) added two doubles for the Dawgs, while Jarrett Burney (Reinhardt University) also had two hits, making it his 12th game with two or more hits this season.
On the mound, Trent Warstler (Emporia State) started and struck out four in two scoreless innings in the second game.
Ashton Luera (Oklahoma Wesleyan University) got the final three outs for his third save of the season. The right-hander had a strikeout and has 33 strikeouts in 18 1/3 innings this season to go with his 1.47 ERA.
The Dawgs will now head out on the road where they will take on the Weyburn Beavers on Tuesday.
