Desbois, Monterrey, Salwonchuk pace Ontario Blue Jays-Siena

INF Gabe Monterrey, OF Trey Salwonchuk and RHP Eric Desbois had good weeks for Ontario Blue Jays-Siena at the 15th annual WWBA 2020 Grads or 16U National Championship at Perfect Game Park At LakePoint in Cartersville, Ga. 

Monterrey led the way with four doubles and eight RBIs. Monterrey (Oakville, Ont.) batted .286 (6-for-21) in seven games for coach Mike Siena, one of 384 teams on hand. They went 2-5 on the trip.

Monterrey also led the Ontario Blue Jays-Siena with four doubles, eight RBIs and an .876 OPS.  Salwonchuk (Port Perry, Ont.) hit .583 (3-for-8) with an RBI. RHP Desbois pitched eight innings alloowing two runs 

Rough opening: DH Noah Nefsky (Thornhill, Ont.) doubled, while Trey Salwonchuk (Port Perry, Ont.) singled and Monterrey knocked in both runs for the Ontario Blue Jays in a 10-2 loss to the Premier Baseball Futures. RHP Julian Parson (Mississauga, Ont.) started allowing nine runs -- eight earned -- on 10 hits, while striking out four. Parson threw 90 pitch (70% strikes) with his fastball hitting 80 MPH.

Oh so close: The Carolina Cubs 2020 scored single runs in the first, third and fifth innings for a 3-2 win over the Ontario Blue Jays-Siena. DH Monterrey had two hits, including a double, while RF Drew White (Pickering, Ont.) and 3B Nefsky also had hits, while SS Braedon Walsh (Barrie, Ont.) knocked in a run. Eric Desbois (Brooklin, Ont.) had a solid outing pitching five innings allowing three runs -- two earned -- on seven hits and two walks. He threw 74 pitches (60% strikes) topping out at 74 MPH. Lorenzo Oppedisano (Caledon, Ont.) pitched a scoreless outing with his fastball at 76 MPH.

Win No. 1: Thanks to three hits from both CF David Calabrese (Maple, Ont.) and Oppedisano, the Ontario Blue Jays-Siena beat Game on Prospects 16U 10-5. Calabrese doubled and drove in a run, while 2B Oppedisano also doubled. DH Jack Harr (Mississauga, Ont.), 1B Will Davidson (Toronto, Ont.) and SS Montgomery each had two hits. Montgomery doubled and drove in three runs, White singled and had two RBIs, while LF Sean Skorupski (Mississauga, Ont.) also knocked in a pair of runs. C Francesco Gioia (Vaughan, Ont.) also singled. Joe Curic (Mississauga, Ont.) pitched four innings allowing five runs -- two earned -- on four hits and four walks while striking out one. He threw 71 pitches, topping out at 75 MPH. White worked two scoreless innings fanning two and Zach Saufl (Oakville, Ont.) put up a zero in the seventh on 12 pitches (91% strikes).

Sun burnt by Florida burn: SS Walsh and RF Salwonchuk were the only Ontario Blue Jays-Siena to collect hits as the Florida Burn 2020 romped to a 9-0 win. LHP Alex Coles (Milton, Ont.) pitched 5 1/3 innings allowing eight runs -- five earned -- on five hits and four walks, while striking out seven. Coles threw 100 pitches (54%) topping out at 79 MPH. Jake McAdam (Caledon, Ont.) pitched 2/3 of an inning allowing one run.

So close, yet ...: The Canes American 16U edged the Ontario Blue Jays-Siena 4-3 scoring four runs in the second innings. SS Monterrey doubled in a pair of runs, while CF Calabrese, Walsh, Salwonchuk and White all had hits. Nefsky drove in a run. Saufl pitched four innings allowing four runs -- three earned -- allowing six hits and three walks. He threw 83 pitches (54% strikes) topping out at 77 MPH. White pitched two scoreless. The loss dropped their record to 1-4.

A rough start: Down 8-0, Ontario Blue Jays-Siena fell 9-2 to Ohio Elite Baseball-Ratcliff after allowing eight runs in the first two innings. LF Dante Savaglio (Mississauga, Ont.) singled and drove in a run, while CF Calabrese had the other hit. McAdam allowed eight runs on eight hits and two walks in four innings, while striking out two. Desbois pitched three innings allowing one unearned run and striking out one.

Ten is enough: Saufl had one hit to knock in three runs and Walsh singled knocking in two as the Ontario Blue Jays-Siena beat the East Coast Sox Bomb 10-7. The winners scored seven times in the first two innings before allowing the Bomb five runs in their final two at-bats. SS Monterrey had two hits, including a double, while Nefsky had two hits driving in a run. CF Calabrese doubled in a run, while other hits went to Oppedisano and Gioia. Parson gained the win pitching four innings and  allowing four hits and three walks, while striking out two. Curic worked two innings giving up five runs on six hits.
