HOW IT HAPPENED
-Two routine plays that went for throwing errors cost the Junior National Team in the bottom of the first as the Phillies took a 2-0 lead. 2B Edouard Julien (Québec City, Que.) and starting pitcher Jack DeCooman (North Vancouver, B.C.) committed throwing errors on back-to-back plays that brought in one run before a RBI ground out cashed another.
-The juniors got one run back in the second, taking advantage of a walk and a Phillies’ error to put runners on second and third before Michael Stovman (Maple Ridge, B.C.) came up with a one out single to left.
-A leadoff triple to right in the bottom of the second came around to score on a sacrifice fly and the Phillies regained their two-run lead.
-After three scoreless innings from the third to the fifth, the Phillies scored a run in the sixth on a RBI single. Ben Abram (Georgetown, Ont.) took over from DeCooman to start the inning and gave up a one out double before a ground out and single to left brought the runner home.
-The Phillies got some luck in the seventh as they used a single and two perfectly placed infield hits to score a run that put them in front by four.
-Noah Naylor (Mississauga, Ont.) walked with two out in the ninth and moved to second on a throwing error before Edouard Julien drove him in with a line drive single to right field.
JNT HIGHLIGHTS
-Edouard Julien reached base in all four of his plate appearances walking in his first three trips to the plate before singling in the ninth on a hit that drove in Noah Naylor.
-Jack DeCooman got through five innings on the mound giving up just one earned run, while striking out two.
-The Phillies’ complex in Boca Chica is the newest of the academies in the Dominican Republic. Shared on the same property as the Minnesota Twins, the complex features three full fields, bullpen mounds, batting cages and state of the art dorms and training facilities. The complex opened in January with an official opening ceremony that included Phillies’ front office executives Pat Gillick, David Montgomery and Matt Klentak.
