How good in Gunnar Hoglund from Ole Miss?
Well, down at 1 Blue Jays Way only 10 Toronto Blue Jays will be higher paid than the Jays’ first-round pick Hoglund this season. The former Ole Miss Rebel agreed to a $3.247,500 bonus, which is less than the assigned slot of $3.36 Million. It ranks as the sixth highest bonus in club history.
Hoglund is recovering from Tommy John surgery that he underwent in May, so he will likely be out from 12-to-18 months after the surgery. Like manager Cito Gaston used to say, “You never know when a pitcher is going to come back from shoulder surgery ... but guys coming back from Tommy John? It’s sort of like a bus ... it might be a few minutes late or a couple of minutes early, but they’re coming back.”
In his first 11 starts, Hoglund had a 2.87 ERA, striking out 96 batters and walking 17 in 62 2/3 innings, while allowing seven homers.
During his time at Mississippi, he compiled a 10-5 record with a 3.68 ERA in 32 games (31 starts). He walked 35 and fanned 186 in 154 innings.
