Elliott: Five Toronto Mets on Perfect Game's Canada/Puerto Rico First Team

Each spring the Perfect Game Scouting Service selects All-American teams for its nine draft regions. The regions cover the 53 areas scouted in North America (50 states, plus Washington, DC, Puerto Rico and Canada).

Canadians and players from Puerto Rico are lumped in the same group for picking an All High School Senior Team. We’re not sure why Canada and Puerto Rico are lumped together for Perfect Game purposes.

Certainly it’s not because of geography. Perhaps it’s because both areas saw their high schoolers become eligible for the draft the same year.

For this spring Toronto Mets coaches Rich Leitch and Darryl Reid had the most players on PG’s Canada/PuertoRico Region First Team with five selected by the scouting service’s set of evaluators.

Named to the first team were LHP Mitchell Bratt (Newmarket, Ont.), LHP Will Droll (Thunder Bay, Ont.), SS Brando Leroux (Markham, Ont.), OF Caden Shapiro (Toronto, Ont.) and RHP Virot Siharath (Keswick, Ont.).

Next best behind the Mets, were the Great Lake Canadians, coached by Adam Stern and Chris Robinson, along with the Ontario Blue Jays, coached by Joey Ellison, Corey Eckstein and Mike Steed.

Great Lake First Teamers are RHP Tanner Dawe (London, Ont.), INF Core Jackson (Wyoming, Ont.), LHP Adam Shoemaker (Cambridge, Ont.) and LHP Calvin Ziegler (Heidelberg, Ont.), who is now pitching for the TNXL Academy and will pitch for the Ohio Warhawks prior to the July draft. Ziegler is expected to be the top high schooler drafted in Canada.

The four Ontario Blue Jays are 1B Josiah Devapalan (Brampton, Ont.), RHP Nelson Mercado (Brampton, Ont.), OF Glenn Noronha (Mississauga, Ont.) and OF Mateo Zeppieri (Newmarket, Ont.)

The other teams with more than one player selected were the Okotoks Dawgs -- RHP Simon Lusignan (Varennes, Que.) and RHP Andrew Yusypchuk (Edmonton, Alta.) -- and the FieldHouse Pirates -- Emilien Pitre (Repentigny, Que.) and Ben Roberts (Burlington, Ont.).

On the Honourable Mention list, the Ontario Blue Jays had 12 selections, while the Academy Baseball Canada and the Mets had four apiece.
