Elliott: Happy Canada Day, our 18th annual Canuck lineup
By Bob Elliott
Canadian Baseball Network
Happy Canada Day.
The World Baseball Classic qualifier lies ahead for Team Canada in 2020. That is a requirement for the No. 7 ranked baseball country in the world after Canada went winless in 2017 at Marlins Park.
Canada lost to Dominican Republic (8-2), Colombia (4-1) and Team USA (8-0). Five years ago Canada headed to Armin-Wolf-Arena in Regensburg, Germany to beat the Czech Republic, Great Britain and Germany.
Before we get way down that road, as the Blue Jays don their red tops to celebrate Canada Day against the Detroit Tigers Sunday afternoon at the Rogers Centre, it is time for our Canada Day team.
Our 18th annual team includes major leaguers, minor leaguers, independent league players and also those playing in foreign lands.
Way back when we started this exercise -- like at the end of June in 2001 -- this concept was like selecting Blue Jays' probable pitchers for a series against the Montreal Expos in an inter-league series. Basically a daydream.
Commissioner Bud Selig and his marketing gurus had not yet created the formation of the 16-country WBC. Our first Canada Day lineup made its debut the day the Red Sox trio of Rolando Arrojo, Rod Beck and Derek Lowe blanked the Jays and Chris Carpenter 4-0 on two hits (singles by Shannon Stewart and Alex Gonzalez) in 2001 before 34,348 fans. Back then the Jays entered play five games below .500.
This year the Jays sit four games below .500 but drew only 27,066 fans on Saturday on a Canads Day weekend.
Last spring Canada was missing about seven of its best players.
Our commissioner Fergie Jenkins (Chatham, Ont.) had help from important Canadian citizens: Pat Gillick, former president of the Philadelphia Phillies and Hall of Fame general manager of the Blue Jays, Paul Beeston (Welland, Ont.), former Jays president, GM Alex Anthopoulos (Montreal, Que.) of the Atlanta Braves; assistant GM Andrew Tinnish (Ottawa, Ont.) of the Jays plus former GMs Doug Melvin (Chatham, Ont.) and Gord Ash (Toronto, Ont.) of the Milwaukee Brewers.
Our Canada Day lineup is always healthy as triple crown winners thanks to doctors Jason Smith, Allan Gross, Ron Taylor and Marc Philippon. Each player is at the top of his game when it comes to health.
Manager Ernie Whitt (Clinton Township, Mich. a Windsor suburb) has Stubby Clapp (Windsor, Ont.), Denis Boucher (Laval, Que.), Ryan Dempster (Gibsons, BC) and Larry Walker (Maple Ridge, BC), Canada’s greatest hitter and Greg Hamilton (Ottawa, Ont.) on his staff. Dempster was the anchor of our Canada Day team for 13 consecutive years, including six opening day starting assignments.
Our pool to chose from is down from a year ago: Nine Canucks have appeared in the majors this year, down one from 10 Canucks appeared on major-league rosters by July 1.
In June, 21 Canadians were selected in the draft, the same total as a year ago. And four went in the first 10 rounds led by first rounder Noah Naylor (Mississauga, Ont.) of the Ontario Blue Jays, who went 29th over-all in North America to the Cleveland Indians. With Naylor still unsigned, six have signed six-figure signing bonuses.
A total of 71 Canucks have appeared on minor-league rosters this season, the same as a year ago. In all 114 have been in the minors (one more from a year ago) including 18 who have triple-A time) and 31 in independent ball.
We’ve chosen from deeper talent pools, we often think back to 1984 when there were only two Canadians in the majors: Terry Puhl (Melville, Sask.) and Doug Frobel (Ottawa, Ont.).
The lineup:
Leading off is centre fielder Dalton Pompey (Mississauga, Ont.) as he did last March in the WBC. Pompey was injured stealing a base. Pompey is the only true centre fielder that the country has and the only lead-off man too. This is his fifth time on the team and his third start.
Batting second is shortstop Russell Martin (Montreal, Que.) of the Blue Jays. Martin may have the lowest batting average among the Blue Jays regulars, yet he is third behind Curtis Granderson and Justin Smoak when it comes to on-base percentage. Martin was going to play short last year in the WBC. However, insurance types in New York declined approved since he had his knee scoped in the off season. This is Martin’s 13th start -- 11 behind the plate -- and his 14th selection to our team.
Canada’s highest-paid athlete, Joey Votto (Etobicoke, Ont.) of the Cincinnati Reds hits third. Votto volunteered to play left in prior years when first base was a crowded picture with Justin Morneau and Freddie Freeman sharing first and DH. Votto is back at first base now in his 11th start and 13th appearance.
Making his sixth Canada Day start and hitting clean up is 3B Freddie Freeman of the Atlanta Braves. Freeman was WBC-eligible since his parents grew up in Windsor, Ont. Freeman wanted to play for Canada in 2013 WBC as a tribute to his late mother. Yet, there was not any room with Morneau and Votto sharing first and DH spots.
Hitting fifth, is left fielder Tyler O’Neill from Walker’s home (Maple Ridge, BC). It is his third start on our Canada Day team. He is at triple-A Memphis after two stops at Busch Stadium earlier this season with the Cardinals. He has 18 homers at Memphis and three with the Cardinals.
Batting sixth is right fielder Michael Saunders (Victoria, BC) who had short, unproductive stints at triple-A Norfolk and Charlotte. Saunders is a free agent but is less than two seasons away from being voted into the 2016 all-star game at Petco Park. He won the fan vote ahead of George Springer of the Astros, Dustin Pedroia of the Red Sox, Ian Kinsler of the Tigers and Evan Longoria of the Rays for the final roster spot. It is Saunders’ 11th time on the team and his ninth start.
Hitting seventh at third is Vlad Guerrero (Montreal, Que.) who is denting fences for the New Hampshire Fisher Cats in the double-A Eastern League. He has 11 homers and 55 RBIs for a 1.124 OPS. It is Guerrero’s first start and second time being named to the team.
Squatting behind the plate and batting ninth is Dustin Houle (Penticton, BC) who has played 24 games at double-A Biloxi, as well as two each at triple-A Colorado Springs and two at class-A-Carolina. It is the first time Houle has been named to the team.
And batting ninth -- and running unattached as they say at the track meets -- is free agent Brett Lawrie (Langley, BC). He is a free agent after being released last spring by the Chicago White Sox.
On the mound will be James Paxton of Ladner, BC. The Seattle lefty will be making his third start in his fifth selection.
And now Donald S. Cherry (Kingston, Ont. -- Canada’s first captial) threw out the ceremonial first pitch as we go upstairs to announcer Murry Eldon, like in the old-days for the pre-game introductions with the 28-player WBC roster ...
