Elliott: It’s Canada Day, our 21st annual all-Canuck lineup

By Bob Elliott

Canadian Baseball Network

Usually the first line of this piece for two decades has been ... “Happy Canada Day.”

We can’t do it this year and it has nothing to do with the pandemic, although 16 months between practices was not a ride.

When we started this mythical Canada Day lineup in 2001 we would gather the gang at SkyDome. Usually they would line up on the third base line for the anthem, set for a 1:05 start on July 1 ... Canada Day.

This year we decided to gather our mythical group night before on June 30.

After all we had to observe moments of silence for the unmarked graves of native Canadian children.

_ A total of 751 minutes of silence -- 12 hours and 52 minutes -- for each of the grave sites found at the site of a Marieval residential school in Saskatchewan.

_ And on the morning of July 1, 215 minutes of silence -- three hours and 58 minutes -- after the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc nation found unmarked graves near Kamloops.

They did not teach us about residential schools at Rideau Public or Winston Churchill or KCVI. Yet, Gordon Downie, lead singer of the Tragically Hip knew. After the moments of silence and the rest of the Hip play Oh Canada, then, and only then will Nick Weglarz (Stevensville, Ont.) and Vince Perkins (Victoria, BC) throw out the ceremonial first pitches.

Both were on the 2009 World Baseball Classic team and both had aboriginal roots. Nick’s grandpa, Rick Marriott could trace his ancestry to the Sarsee nation in Alberta.

Perkins descended from the Anishinabe (Ojibwa) on Mackinaw Island in Lake Superior in the late 1700s on his maternal side. The Anishinabe woman, Isabella (1808-1885) wed Charles Ross (1794-1844), who supervised the building of Fort Victoria, BC in 1843. On his father’s side, Perkins is descended from Peter Skene Ogden, of Ogden, Utah, a Hudson Bay chief factor and a Cree woman, Marie, from Saskatchewan.

Nick Pivetta (Victoria, BC) will get the ball, wear a red Canada Day top -- similar to the ones that the Jays will wear in Buffalo for the 1:07 start -- and throw the actual first pitch around 5:03.

We came up with the idea of putting together a team of Canada’s best 21 years ago ... before the World Baseball Classic was a gleam in the eye of commissioner Bud Selig.

Our commissioners, national treasure Fergie Jenkins (Chatham, Ont.) and fellow Hall of Famer Larry Walker (Maple Ridge, BC) had zero trouble recruiting the players.

Pat Gillick, part owner of the Philadelphia Phillies and former Hall of Fame GM of the Blue Jays, Paul Beeston (Welland, Ont.), former Jays president, GM Alex Anthopoulos (Montreal, Que.) of the Atlanta Braves; assistant GM Andrew Tinnish (Ottawa, Ont.) of the Jays, plus former GMs Doug Melvin (Chatham, Ont.) and Gord Ash (Toronto, Ont.) of the Milwaukee Brewers -- all important Canadian citizens -- twisted arms of various farm directors and general managers so that all players were available.

Our coaching staff is deep: Mr. post-season Russell Martin (Montreal, Que.) will be on the staff, former North Delta Blue Jay star Justin Morneau (New Westminster, BC), an MVP winner with the Minnesota Twins and Cardinals 1B coach Stubby Clapp (Windsor, Ont.), Mr. Canada on the international stage, will be on the coaching staff.

Looking after the pitchers will be: New York Yankees scout Denis Boucher (Lachine, Que.), Cubs executive RHPs Ryan Dempster (Gibsons, BC) anchor of our Canada Day team for 13 consecutive years, former Cy Young award winner Eric Gagne (Magouche, Que.), Team Canada coach Paul Quantrill (Port Hope, Ont.) and 17-game Colorado Rockies winner LHP Jeff Francis (North Delta, BC)

In 2001, there were 11 Canadians appeared in the majors that season before Canada Day ... LHP Rheal Cormier (Cap Pele, N.B.) Philadelphia Phillies, LF Rob Ducey (Cambridge, Ont.) Montreal Expos, RHP Eric Gagne (Mascouche, Que.) Los Angeles Dodgers, 3B Corey Koskie (Anola, Man.) Minnesota Twins, RHP Chris Reitsma (Calgary, Alta.) Cincinnati Reds, 1B Matt Stairs (Fredericton, N.B.) Chicago Cubs and RHP Jeff Zimmerman (Kelowna, BC) Texas Rangers, plus Clapp, Dempster, then with the Marlins, Quantrill and Walker.

This year there are 12, which is a long way from 1984 when there two Canucks in the majors: Terry Puhl (Melville, Sask.) and Doug Frobel (Ottawa, Ont.).

Our 21st annual team includes major leaguers, minor leaguers and those playing in foreign lands. Of course on our mythical team our docs have cured all injuries and cleared everyone healthy to play.

The lineup:

Langley Blaze grad Tyler O’Neill (Maple Ridge, BC)

Langley Blaze grad Tyler O’Neill (Maple Ridge, BC)

Leading off and playing centre Tyler O’Neill from Walker’s home (Maple Ridge, BC), who won a Gold Glove award last years with the Cardinals. He will be making his sixth Canada Day start.

This year he is hitting .272 with 16 doubles, 15 homers, with 36 RBIs and an .880 OPS in 61 games.

Etobicoke Rangers grad Joey Votto.

Batting second is Canada’s highest-paid athlete, Joey Votto (Etobicoke, Ont.) of the Reds. The Etobicoke Rangers grad is in his 14th start and 16th appearance.

This season Votto is hitting .254 with eight doubles, 10 homers, 34 RBIs and a .796 OPS in 50 games.

Vlad Guerrero is the best homegrown Blue Jay since — Roy Halladay maybe? — signed by then GM Alex Anthopoulos and then scouting director Andrew Tinnish.

Vlad Guerrero is the best homegrown Blue Jay since — Roy Halladay maybe? — signed by then GM Alex Anthopoulos and then scouting director Andrew Tinnish.

Hitting third and playing third base in his fourth start is Vlad Guerrero (Montreal, Que.) of the Blue Jays. He has been at first base this year. We have faith he can make the adjustment to third base. It’s like riding a scooter.

In the running for the triple crown (he leads the AL in RBIs, batting average and is second in homers to Los Angeles Angels’ Shohei Ohtani) and maybe the MVP -- if we exclude two-way players like Ohtani -- he is hitting .339 with 15 doubles, a triple, 26 homers, 66 RBIs and a 1.117 OPS in 76 games.

Freddie Freeman wanted to play for Canada in the WBC twice, but with Justin Morneau and Joey Votto there was zero room at the inn … or the roster.

Making his ninth Canada Day start and hitting fourth is DH Freddie Freeman of the Atlanta Braves. Freeman is WBC-eligible since his parents grew up in Windsor, Ont.

Freeman owns a .261 average with 11 doubles, 17 homers, 44 RBIs and an .843 OPS in 78 games.

London Badgers grad Jamie Romak (London, Ont.)

London Badgers grad Jamie Romak (London, Ont.)

Batting fifth and playing left is Jamie Romak (London, Ont.) in his fourth start and ninth year on the team. Romak is also in his fifth season with Korea and on this Canada Day will be presented with the Tip O’Neill award by the Canadian ambassador to Korea.

This season with SSG Landers he is hitting .237 with seven doubles, 17 homers, 43 RBIs and an .827 OPS in 47 games. He has hit 129 homers in 484 games since going to Korea. He was the Tip O’Neill winner in 2020 as Canada’s best last year. He set a Canadian single-season record with 43 homers in the minors or in foreign ball in 2018.

Next hitting sixth, is right fielder Josh Naylor (Mississauga, Ont.) of Cleveland. This is Naylor’s third start and fifth time on the team.

Before he was injured Sunday, Naylor was hitting .253 with 13 doubles, seven homers, 21 RBIs and a .700 OPS in 69 games.

ABC grad Abraham Toro

Seventh in the order is 2B Abraham Toro (Longueuil, Que.). Toro may have been bumped from third but not from our lineup. He played 18 games in the minors at second and one with the Astros. He’s making his second start in our lineup.

He started the season at triple-A Sugar Land where hit .352 with five doubles, a triple, two homers, 11 RBIs and a 1.078 OPS. Since being promoted to the Astros he is hitting .245 with two homers, 13 RBIs and a .689 OPS in 17 games.

Former Ontario Blue Jay and Mississauga Major INF Daniel Pinero.

Former Ontario Blue Jay and Mississauga Major INF Daniel Pinero.

Batting eighth is shortstop Daniel Pinero (Toronto, Ont.) of the Detroit Tigers system. At triple-A Toledo Pinero hit .200, with four doubles, a homer, five RBIs and a .775 OPS in 11 games. He is on the injury list and is at the Tigers’ alternate site.

He hit two homers for Canada going 3-for-4 with four RBIs in a 6-5 loss to the Dominican Republic at Port St. Lucie in the pre-Olympic Qualifier, prompting Jose Bautista to say: “That Canadian kid at short nearly beat us by himself.”

Langley Blaze grad C Kellin Deglan

Langley Blaze grad C Kellin Deglan

And batting ninth is Kellin Deglan (Langley, BC) who is playing at triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Deglan is making his first start and his fourth appearance on the roster.

He is batting .233 with a double, a homer, three RBIs and a .648 OPS in 12 games. Deglan caught every game of Canada’s four games at the pre-Olympic qualifier in West Palm Beach and drew rave reviews from veteran pitchers.

25026307_web1_210430-VNE-NickPivetta-GreatMLBstart-NickPivetta_1-1024x684.jpg

And on the mound is Pivetta off to a great start with the Red Sox. Pivetta is in his fifth year on our team and is in his first year as our ace.

To date he is 6-3 with a 4.00 ERA in 15 starts, as he has walked 38 and fanned 94 in 81 innings.
