Elliott: Canada Day means our 22nd annual all-Canuck lineup

Elliott: It’s Canada Day, time for our 22nd annual all-Canuck lineup
By Bob Elliott
Canadian Baseball Network
And a “Happy Canada Day” to you, too.
Our mythical Canada Day lineup began in 2001 long before the World Baseball Classic team was even created by former commissioner Bud Selig to expand the industry around the globe.
We don’t have a whole lot of difficult decisions to make. Like every other pretend team of all Canucks or WBC-eligible Canucks. Well, Wednesday night we did have to make sure that Toronto Blue Jays infielder Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (Montreal, Que.) and Boston Red Sox starter Nick Pivetta (Victoria, BC) did not have rooms on the same floor.
Pivetta hit Alejandro Kirk on the left elbow. Guerrero hooted at Pivetta from the third base dugout and Pivetta screamed back. The benches emptied, although zero subsequent scuffles ensued.
Pivetta will get the ball for the start wearing a red Canada Day cap and top -- similar to what the Jays will wear on Friday against the Tampa Bay Rays.
National treasure Fergie Jenkins (Chatham, Ont.) and Larry Walker (Maple Ridge, BC) had zero trouble recruiting the players and easing pitch-count restrictions so many teams insist upon during international competition.
Why?
Because both have plaques in Cooperstown, along with Pat Gillick, part owner of the Philadelphia Phillies and former Blue Jays Hall of Fame general manager and a Canadian citizen.
In addition to those three: Paul Beeston (Welland, Ont.), former Jays president, GM Alex Anthopoulos (Montreal, Que.) of the Atlanta Braves; Farhan Zaidi (Sudbury, Ont.), of the San Francisco Giants, assistant GM Andrew Tinnish (Ottawa, Ont.) of the Jays, plus former GMs Doug Melvin (Chatham, Ont.) and Gord Ash (Toronto, Ont.) of the Milwaukee Brewers -- all important diamond Canucks -- twisted arms of various farm directors and GMs so each was available.
Our coaching staff is deep: Recently inducted Canadian Baseball Hall of Famer Justin Morneau (New Westminster, BC) of the Minnesota Twins and Cardinals 1B coach Stubby Clapp (Windsor, Ont.), Mr. Canada on the international stage, and Walker will be on the coaching staff.
Looking after our pitchers will be: New York Yankees scout Denis Boucher (Lachine, Que.), Cubs executive RHPs Ryan Dempster (Gibsons, BC) anchor of our Canada Day team for 13 consecutive years, Team Canada coach Paul Quantrill (Port Hope, Ont.), St. Marys inductee Jeff Francis (North Delta, BC) of the Colorado Rockies and former Cy Young award winner Eric Gagne (Mascouche, Que.), who should have a plaque in St. Marys.
In our first year, 11 Canadians appeared in the majors in 2001, before Canada Day ... LHP Rheal Cormier (Cap Pele, N.B.) Philadelphia Phillies, LF Rob Ducey (Cambridge, Ont.) Montreal Expos, 3B Corey Koskie (Anola, Man.) Minnesota Twins, RHP Chris Reitsma (Calgary, Alta.) Cincinnati Reds, 1B Matt Stairs (Fredericton, N.B.) Chicago Cubs, RHP Jeff Zimmerman (Kelowna, BC) Texas Rangers, plus Clapp, Dempster, Quantrill, Walker and Gagne.
This year there are 11, which is a long way from 1984 when there were two Canucks in the majors: Terry Puhl (Melville, Sask.) and Doug Frobel (Ottawa, Ont.).
Our 22nd annual team includes major leaguers, minor leaguers and one pitching in the Far East — and 1/3 of the starting lineup are first timers. Fans can only dream that Canada would field a team like this for the next WBC in March.
The lineup:
Leading off and playing centre field Tyler O’Neill from Walker’s home (Maple Ridge, BC), who won his second straight Gold Glove award in 2021 with the Cardinals. He will be making his seventh Canada Day start.
This year he is hitting .241 with six doubles, a triple, four homers, 28 RBIs and an .653 OPS in 45 games.
Batting second is Canada’s highest-paid ball player, Joey Votto (Etobicoke, Ont.) of the Reds. The Etobicoke Rangers grad is in his 15th start and 17th appearance.
This season Votto is hitting .224 with 15 doubles, a triple, six homers, 25 RBIs and a .740 OPS in 58 games.
Hitting third and playing third base in his fifth start is Vlad Guerrero (Montreal, Que.) of the Blue Jays. He has been at first base this year, but with the depth we have at first and DH, we figure he is the best one to make the move.
He does not have the same numbers he had a year ago -- when he had a 1.117 OPS on Canada Day, but he’s hitting a solid .262 with 10 doubles, 18 homers, 46 RBIs and an .843 OPS in 75 games.
Making his ninth Canada Day start and hitting fourth is DH Freddie Freeman of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Freeman is WBC-eligible since his parents grew up in Windsor, Ont.
Freeman owns a .304 average with 24 doubles, nine homers, 47 RBIs and an .876 OPS in 78 games.
Batting fifth and playing right field is Josh Naylor (Mississauga, Ont.) of Cleveland. This is Naylor’s fourth start and sixth time on the team.
Naylor is batting .263 with 13 doubles, nine homers, 41 RBIs and has an .799 OPS in 51 games.
Next, hitting sixth is second baseman Abraham Toro (Longueuil, Que.) of the Seattle Mariners. This is his third start. He has played in 28 games at second and 15 at third base.
With the M’s he is hitting .180 with nine doubles, a triple, seven homers, 20 RBIs and a .563 OPS in 62 games.
Batting seventh is shortstop Otto Lopez (Montreal, Ont.) of the Blue Jays system. At triple-A Buffalo he is hitting .244 with seven doubles, three triples. a homer, 15 RBIs and a .710 OPS in 36 games.
He appeared in one game with the Blue Jays. For Lopez, it is his first start and the second time on our team.
Former Ontario Blue Jays C Noah (Bo) Naylor (Mississauga, Ont.) one of Cleveland’s top prospects.
In the No. 8 spot (or double clean-up as the cool kids say) is catcher Bo Naylor (Mississauga, Ont.). Yes, he is the younger brother of Josh Naylor. Bo has been at two levels in the Cleveland system combining to bat .257 with 14 doubles, two triples, seven homers, 25 RBIs and an .857 OPS in 60 games.
He started at double-A Akron and has been promoted to triple-A Columbus. Bo also has 11 steals. This is Naylor’s first start and second time on the team.
And batting ninth is Jacob Robson (Windsor, Ont.) who is playing at triple-A Toledo. Robson saw time with the Detroit Tigers a year ago and may be back this year.
He is batting .196 with eight doubles, two triples, three homers, 16 RBIs and a .663 OPS in 49 games. This is Robson’s first start and his fourth time on the roster.
And on the mound is Pivetta who fans saw pitch Wednesday night at Rogers Centre for the Red Sox. Pivetta is in his sixth year on our team and is in his second year as our ace. He gets the edge over RHP Jameson Taillon (The Woodlands, Tex.) a former WBC starter.
This season, Pivetta is 8-5 with a 3.23 ERA in 16 starts, as he has walked 32 and fanned 91 in 94 2/3 innings. Pivetta worked six innings, allowing two runs making it a career-high 11 straight outings of five innings plus on Wednesday. He was an inning short of tying Doug Fister who pitched seven or more in 2017. Since May 7, he has allowed 16 runs in 76 innings for a 1.89 ERA.
