RHP Tate Carey was impressive at the Canadian Futures Showcase inside the Rogers Centre last month.

And he was equally as dominant outside in the Florida sunshine for Canadian Premier entry at the 25th annual Perfect Game WWBA World championship in Jupiter.

In the opener of pool play, a 4-1 loss to the Sticks Brewster/White Sox Scout Team, Carey (Windsor, Ont.) fanned seven in four innings. Carey hit 92 mph with his fastball, allowing one run on two hits, as he struck out seven. Yep ... seven out of 12 outs recorded. He threw 53 pitches -- 66% strikes.

LHP Sam Maclaughlin (Toronto, Ont.) followed Carey to the mound and allowed two unearned runs on two hits and two walks in one inning. He hit 89 mph in his 27-pitch inning -- 48% strikes. Finishing up was RHP Evan Schweizer (Oakville, Ont.) who pitched two innings giving up a run on one hit. He threw an economical 25 pitches -- 56% strikes -- and had his fastball was clocked at 90 mph.

SS Brendan Lawson (Toronto, Ont.) went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles, while other hits went to CF Jorge Valdes (Milton, Ont.), 3B Jordan Jacob (Maple, Ont.), C Brayden Ricketts (Brampton, Ont.) and 1B Gianluca Montanaro (Aurora, Ont.), who also knocked in a run.

The 104-team tourney -- 26 pools of four teams apiece -- is staged at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter, Fla. and attracts the most scouts and recruiters of the calendar year each season.
