Western Canada -- especially those folks in the crude “oil bidness” -- know all about the Enbridge Canadian Mainline, the Keystone Pipeline, the Trans Mountain Pipeline, and the Express Pipeline.

In Eastern Canada, they know about the pipeline from Dorchester, Ont. to Fairborn, Ohio.

The Great Lake Canadians call Dorchester home and last spring when COVID shut down Canadian diamonds, Great Lakes sent two arms to the Ohio Warhawks, who are based in Fairborn. They were RHP Calvin Ziegler (Heidelberg, Ont.) and LHP Adam Shoemaker (Cambridge, Ont.).

With their base laid in western Ontario -- for as we all know “It’s all About the Base ... The Base,” Ziegler went in the second round of the draft to the New York Mets -- a team which usually stays clear of high schoolers -- handing out a bonus of $910,000 US. Shoemaker went in the 11th to the Atlanta Braves, receiving a $477,500 bonus.

Caleb Clark is either eight or nine months away from the draft 2022, yet he is following in the footsteps of Ziegler, a former Junior National Team player. Ziegler, Shoemaker and Clark have all pitched for the Warhawks.

Pitching for the Warhawks, Clark (Orillia, Ont.) was dominant against the Cincinnati Reds Scout Team allowing one unearned run three hits and a walk, while striking out seven in 3 2/3 innings. Clark’s fastball was clocked at 91 MPH and he departed with the score deadlocked 1-1. The Warhawks went on to beat the Cincinnati Reds Scout Team 9-1 in the round of 32. He threw 75 pitches (61% for strikes). With the victory, the Warhawks advance to the round of 16.

Ziegler is the highest pick ever from Heidelberg, while Shoemaker is the top pick from Cambridge since Scott Thorman (Cambridge, Ont.) went 30th overall to the Atlanta Braves in 2000. Thorman was the first high schooler to go in the first round, signing for $1.225 million. He has now managed Kansas City Royals farm teams to three championship in the last four years. The best player we ever saw from Orillia? Nick Owen -- a regular at the Baseball Canada senior nationals. A slugger.
