Elliott: Ontario Blue Jays, ABC lead way on Rawlings PG Regional Pre-season All-Americans

Ontario Blue Jays’ RHP Ryan McDonagh (Milton, Ont.) has committed to Xavier, but he could sign before the July draft as a free agent. He made the Rawlings Perfect Game pre-season All-American First Team.

Going back the past 10 months or so we have heard it again ... and again.

“You know who is doing an excellent job with his program?

“Marc-Antoine Bérubé,” one veteran scout said.

Another said between pitches at a game: “I’ve really been impressed with the Academy Baseball Canada and how Berube has turned things around.”

There were a couple of other compliments to the executive director of the Montreal-based Académie de Baseball Canada. But they were basically “même chose.”

Well, compliments are nice, but how about some evidence?

Besides having two of the top four Canucks in the draft last July being from Quebec, what other evidence is there?

ABC grad INF Émilien Pitre went in the second round to the Tampa Bay Rays. Selected 58th overall in North America from the Kentucky Wildcats, Pitre (Repentigny, Que.) was given a $1.52 million signing bonus.

And reliever Louis-Philippe Langevin was selected in the fourth round by the Kansas City Royals. KC gave Langevin (Quebec, Que.) a $597,500 bonus to leave the University of Louisiana at Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns.

Well, that was July. What about this season?

Believe it or not, the ABC tied for the most players named to the annual Preseason All-American and All-Region Teams presented by Rawlings Sporting Goods Company, Inc. and Perfect Game Scouting Service. The annual Rawlings-Perfect Game preseason All-American and All-Region Teams recognize the top senior high school athletes. The annual teams highlight Rawlings’ and Perfect Game’s commitment to high school athletics and next-level players nationwide.

There were 13 of Berube’s ABC players earning honours on the Canada/Puerto Rico berths on the First Team and Honourable Mention list for the 2025 season. Perfect Game lumps Canada and Puerto Rico together as one of its nine regions. The other eight are Atlantic Region, California, Central, Florida, Northeast, Southeast, Texas and the West.

That total was one behind the Ontario Blue Jays, who had eight First Teams as well and five players selected to the Honourable Mention list.

The ABC group of eight First Teamers includes SS Maxime Boies (Lévis, Que.) who is bound for Kentucky, 1B Esteban Dessureault (Trois-Rivieres, Que.) who is off to Stetson, 2B Félix Gosselin (Drummondville, Que.), RHP Maxim Lachance (Sainte-Anne Perade, Que.), LHP Matis Rodrigue (Montréal, Que.), 3B Justin Rompré (Ste-Anne-De-La-Perade, Que.), RHP Jean-Simon Schupbach (Quebec, Que) and RHP Jacob Sigouin (St-Jean-Sur-Richelieu, Que.).

Five more were named Honorable Mention: SS William Beaudoin (L’Épiphanie, Que.), who is off to Crowder College, LHP Gabriel Blanco (Blainville, Que.), RHP Zachary Landreville (Saint-Jérôme, Que.), RHP Jerome Félix Lessard (Saint-Joseph-Du-Lac, Que.) and RHP Cédrik Marchand (Trois-Rivières, Que.),

The Ontario Blue Jays, coached by Corey Eckstein (Ancaster, Ont.) also has eight First Teamers: SS Jonah Andrade (Oakville, Ont.) who has committed to Dodge City, SS Philip Cheong (Richmond Hill, Ont.) bound for Stanford, RHP Carter Dorrington (Ancaster, Ont.), RHP Ben Goodacre (Ancaster, Ont.) a West Virginia commit, OF John Hughes (Mississauga, Ont.) off to Bowling Green State, C Benji Kautto (Toronto, Ont.) headed to Evansville, RHP Hank Lloyd (Toronto, Ont.) headed to Middlebury College and RHP Ryan McDonagh (Milton, Ont.) signed to attend Xavier.

And six more were Honourable Mentions: OF Jordan Ali Khan (Toronto, Ont), RHP Nick Blumas (Toronto, Ont.), 3B Austin Boylan (Barrie, Ont.) off to North Dakota State, LHP Geoffrey D’Amato (Milton, Ont.), RHP Sam Fraiberg (Toronto, Ont.) and RHP Matthew Spencer (Bradford, Ont.).

Sitting in third place behind the Ontario Blue Jays and the ABC -- with eight First Team choices apiece -- were the FieldHouse Pirates, who had four First Teamers, including RHP Aiden Taggart (Grimsby, Ont.) who passed on a scholarship to the Utah Utes to sign a six-figure bonus with the Toronto Blue Jays earlier this month.

The Great Lake Canadians, Langley Blaze, Mississauga Tigers and Okotoks Dawgs were next with three First Teamers each. The Torronto Mets had a pair of First Team selections, while Delta Blue Jays, Ontario Astros, Ontario Nationals, Ontario Yankees, North Shore Twins, Webber Wildcats and the White Rock Tritons had one each.
