Ellis, Haynes, MacNeil anchor Terriers pitching in tourney win in NJ


Matt Ward (Mississauga, Ont.) drove in Austin Gomm (Mississauga, Ont.) in the bottom of the sixth in the College Elite Showcase tournament and the Ontario Terriers squeezed out a 3-2 victory over Team British Columbia.

The Terriers beat Team BC in the all-Canadian final to claim the prestigious end of summer championship at Diamond Nation in Flemington, NJ. Team BC finished fifth at the Baseball Canada 18U natiionals in Fort McMurray, Alta. 

The Terriers went 5-0‎ on the week, out-scoring opponents 23-3. Terriers pitching and defense was outstanding en route to the title.

Game 1 was a 2-0 ‎win over In the Zone Knights. RHP Owen MacNeil (Georgetown, Ont.) was dominant, going the distance to record the victory. MacNeil earned tournament MVP honours.

In game two, Andrew Haynes (Leaside, Ont.) had the ball versus the Manalapan Braves and pitched six excellent innings before handing the ball off to Karlis Mikelsteins (Richmond Hill, Ont.) who closed out a 3-0 Terriers win.  

After 5-1 and 10-0 victories over the Staten Island Orioles and Long Island Elite, The Terriers found their way to the championship game with a perfect 4-0 record. 

Campbell Ellis (Georgetown, Ont.) went five innings versus the Orioles for the win. Michael Stremlaw (Oakville, Ont.) tossed the final two innings in that victory.

In the 10-0 mercy over Long Island Elite RHP Stephen Phillips (Bolton, Ont.) ripped through five innings of scoreless ball for the win. 

The Terriers were coached by Scott Van de Valk (Acton, Ont.), Ed Heather (Cambridge, Ont.) and Matt Betts (Brantford, Ont.). 

This was the Terriers first major event of the 2018-19 cycle.

They will continue their fall schedule with games versus Canadian and US university teams‎ before wrapping up at the end of September in the North East Classic in Boston.
