Each spring training there comes a time when it becomes obvious that the pitchers are ahead of the hitters.

It happens in major-league camps so it certainly is bound to happen when high schools face first and second-year professionals.

The Junior National Team was limited to three hits while the Washington Nationals prospects scored two early runs to come away with a 2-0 victory.

The Nats used a pair of hits and a walk off starting pitcher Jérémy Pilon (Valleyfield, Que.) to load the bases in the bottom half of the second that led to a run coming in on a fielder’s choice before adding a run on a wild pitch in the third.

Pilon was tagged with one earned run in three innings and he had a pair of strikeouts.

The string of solid pitching continued with Carson Lumley (London, Ont.) and Nick Frers (North Vancouver, BC) working two scoreless innings each while Conor Pote (Sherwood Park, Alta.) tossed a scoreless eighth.

Myles Naylor (Mississauga, Ont.) had two of the Junior National Team’s three hits with Keegan O’Hearn (Oshawa, Ont.) recording the other.
