The Okotoks Dawgs opened the season with a convincing 16-6 win over the Brooks Bombers at Seaman Stadium on Friday night.

The Dawgs had a massive first inning in which they scored six of their 16 runs to take command of the game early.

They would add five more in the fifth to seal the victory. The Dawgs had a combined 18 hits in the win.

In the first inning, Trent Lenihan (White Rock, B.C.) had the first hit of the season for the Dawgs, which started the six-run frame. Lenihan ended the night with three hits. Noah Geekie (Strathclair, Man.) followed it up with a single and an RBI in the first. He finished the contest with two hits and two RBIs.

Left-hander Matt Wilkinson (Ladner, B.C.) started and struck out three batters in two scoreless innings. Relief pitching kept the Bombers’ bats quiet for most of the game until the sixth and eighth inning where they knocked in a combined five runs.

Daniel Hutchison (Chandler-Gilbert Community College) came in and struck out two batters in the ninth inning to close things down for the Dawgs.

The Dawgs will have a quick turnaround as they travel to Brooks on Saturday to conclude their opening week series. Fans can stream Dawgs road games at www.hometeamlive.com.

The Dawgs’ next home game will be on Sunday at 2:05 p.m. when they will be hosting the Lethbridge Bulls.
