Glaus, Trembley will manage USA team against Junior National Team

There will be a couple of familiar faces when the Junior National Team takes the field this week in Cary, N.C.

Greg Hamilton’s Canada squad will take on three different USA Baseball Teams before meeting the set squad leading into the World Cup qualifier.

Team Red will be managed by Troy Glaus, who played third base for the Toronto Blue Jays for 268 games in 2006-07. Glaus hit .258 with 58 homers, knocking in 166 runs and compiling an .856 OPS under then manager John Gibbons.

And the skipper of Team White will be Dave Trembley, of Carthage, N.Y., who caught for the 1974 Kingston Ponies, who played for Dr. Gerry Wager, in the New York State League. Trembley managed the Baltimore Orioles for four seasons, coached with the Houston Astros and managed at class-A Kinston, double-A Harrisburg, class-A Charleston, double-A Wichita, double-A Orlando, class-A Daytona, double-A West Tennessee, triple-A Iowa, double-A Bowie and triple-A Ottawa in the Pittsburgh Pirates, San Diego Padres, Chicago Cubs and Orioles organizations. He also managed State College in the draft League for two years.

CARY, N.C. – USA Baseball named the coaching staff for the 2024 16U/17U National Team Development Program (NTDP), including the appointment of nationally renowned college pitching coach and USA Baseball coaching veteran Justin Parker as pitching coordinator. Parker, along with field coordinator Jim Koerner, USA Baseball’s Director of Player Development, will lead the on-field programming at the event from July 25-28 at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, NC.

This year’s NTDP will feature a 66-player roster split into three teams. The three teams, along with the Canadian Junior National Team, who will be training in Cary for the World Baseball Softball Classic (WBSC) U-18 Baseball World Cup Americas Qualifier next month, will play in a round-robin format across the four days. The agenda will also include workouts, skill development sessions, off-field educational seminars, and exposure to professional scouts, college recruiters, USA Baseball staff, and national team coaches. Additionally, the coaching staff will assess and evaluate players for possible future participation in USA Baseball national team programming.

“We look forward to welcoming this coaching staff to Cary and having them lead this year’s National Team Development Program,” said Koerner. “This is a valuable event for the top amateur players in the nation, and the instruction and guidance they will receive from this group of coaches is second to none. We are set for a great four days of baseball this summer in North Carolina and are excited to watch these coaches prepare our incoming athletes for future national team opportunities.”

In addition to Koerner and Parker, the NTDP staff includes four managers for the event. 2002 World Series MVP Troy Glaus will manage Team Red, while longtime professional manager Dave Trembley will lead Team White and Grambling State Head Coach Davin Pierre will guide Team Navy.

Former Kingston Ponies C Dave Trembley has been inducted into the Lancaster JetHawks Hall of Fame (2008), the Antelope Valley College Sports HOF (2009), the Florida State League HOF (2012), the State University of New York at Brockport HOF (2015), and the North Country Sports HOF.

The 2024 16U/17U NTDP will take place from July 25-28 at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina. The roster will feature players identified from the National Team Championships in Arizona and North Carolina, as well as last year’s 2023 National Team Identification Series (NTIS) Champions Cup. A select number of players from the 2023 15U and 16U NTIS Champions Cup have already been selected for the 2024 16U/17U NTDP.
