Goldeyes sign Tristan Pompey

Toronto Mets and Miami Marlins draft pick Tristan Pompey (Mississauga, Ont.) has signed with the Winnipeg Goldeyes.

The Winnipeg Goldeyes signed outfielder Tristan Pompey on Tuesday.

Pompey last played in 2021, splitting time at three levels of the Miami Marlins’ organization. The Mississauga, Ont., native hit .195 with 17 runs scored, four doubles, one home run, and 16 RBIs in 56 games, and reached the triple-A level for the first time in his career. Pompey drew 29 walks in 194 plate appearances for a 15 percent walk rate.

Pompey was drafted by the Marlins in the third round in 2018 out of the University of Kentucky where he hit a combined .321 with 24 home runs and 113 RBIs in 165 games for the Wildcats from 2016 to 2018. The 25-year-old outfielder earned All-Southeastern Conference honours as a junior in 2018.

Pompey is in his fourth season of professional baseball, and is a lifetime .234 hitter with a .345 on-base percentage and 14 percent walk rate in 151 games played. A switch-hitter and right-handed throwing defender, Pompey has played for both the Canadian National Team and the Canadian Junior National team, and last represented the former in the 2019 Premier12 qualifier for the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics.

Additionally, the Goldeyes traded left-handed pitcher Jaylen Smith to the Frontier League’s Tri-City ValleyCats in exchange for future considerations, and right-handed pitcher Jose Vasquez (Cambridge, Ont.) to the Frontier League’s Trois-Rivieres Aigles in exchange for future considerations. Smith had a 4.61 ERA in 13 2/3 innings for the Goldeyes, striking out 13 and walking eight. Vasquez was 0-1 with a 5.63 ERA and 20 strikeouts in 16 innings.

The Goldeyes’ active roster currently stands at 24. American Association players may carry up to 25 players on their active roster throughout the regular season.
