Gryphons' Brown named OUA Athlete of the Week
October 11, 2022
Official Guelph Gryphons Athletics News Release
For the first time during the 2022-23 season, a Guelph Gryphon student-athlete has been named OUA Athlete of the Week.
Sam Brown, a second-year athlete on the Guelph Gryphons baseball team, takes home the conference-wide honours after a sensational, three-game performance over the weekend, helping Guelph come out on top at the OUA West Regional Qualifiers.
Brown (Toronto, Ont.) shares the OUA award alongside Ottawa Gee-Gees women's soccer player, Cassandra Provost, and Toronto Varsity Blues tennis player, Winnie Choi.
The Gryphon baseball team is in the midst of one of the greatest seasons in program history and Brown has been in the middle of it all season long. The 19-year-old third baseman put together a sensational weekend with the Gryphons, helping them go undefeated (3-0) during play at the OUA West Regional Qualifiers (Oct. 7-8 in Guelph).
The Gryphons beat McMaster once, and Brock twice to earn a spot at the OUA Baseball Championship Tournament, with Brown putting up some eye-popping numbers. A sport and event management major, Brown finished the weekend 9-for-13 with two home runs, 14 RBIs, two triples and a double.
Both of Brown's home runs were of the walk-off variety, with the Gryphons mercying their opponents in each of their three games. Brown’s walk-off homer in Saturday's matchup with Brock was a grand slam that officially sent Guelph to the conference championship tournament.
Brown's outstanding weekend performance comes on the heels of an impressive regular season in which the Toronto native hit .354 with 20 RBIs in 16 conference games.
Brown and the Gryphons now sit just two wins away from capturing the first OUA title in program history.
The Gryphons head to the 2022 OUA Baseball Championship Tournament that begins on Friday at Jack Couch Park in Kitchener. The Gryphons will face the Queen's Gaels on Friday (Oct. 14 – 12:30pm) in an OUA semifinal matchup, with the defending OUA champion Toronto Varsity Blues and the Waterloo Warriors the two teams on the other side of the OUA final four bracket.
