Elliott: Celebrate Canada Day with our 24th annual all-Canuck lineup
July 1 2024
By Bob Elliott
Canadian Baseball Network
Tis that time of the year again.
So we wish everyone reading and those of you who are having it read to you a most happiest “Happy Canada Day.”
Way back in 2001, long before the World Baseball Classic was created by former commissioner Bud Selig to expand the industry around the globe, we came up with the idea of a mythical Canada Day lineup to celebrate our country’s best.
It is different than a World Baseball Classic lineup. For on this team everyone wants to play. Everyone is healthy. There are zero pitch-restrictions like there are when major-league clubs loan players to Canada from their minor-league organizations.
A total of 14 Canadians have appeared in the majors this season -- down three from 2023 -- plus two who are WBC eligible and 15 have seen time at the triple-A level.
National treasures Fergie Jenkins (Chatham, Ont.) and Larry Walker (Maple Ridge, BC) served as co-general managers and had absolutely zero problems recruiting.
Besides those two: GM Alex Anthopoulos (Montreal, Que.) of the Atlanta Braves; GM Farhan Zaidi (Sudbury, Ont.), of the San Francisco Giants and Paul Beeston (Welland, Ont.), former Jays president, helped pry players away from GMs and farm directors. Also working behind the scenes were Jays assistant GM Andrew Tinnish (Ottawa, Ont.), former GMs Doug Melvin (Chatham, Ont.) and Gord Ash (Toronto, Ont.) both of the Milwaukee Brewers.
In 2001, our first year, 11 Canadians were in the majors, before Canada Day that year ... LHP Rheal Cormier (Cap Pele, NB) of the Phillies, LF Rob Ducey (Cambridge, Ont.) Montreal Expos, 3B Corey Koskie (Anola, Man.) Minnesota Twins, RHP Chris Reitsma (Calgary, Alta.) Cincinnati Reds, 1B Matt Stairs (Fredericton, NB) Chicago Cubs, RHP Jeff Zimmerman (Kelowna, BC) Texas Rangers, Paul Quantrill (Port Hope, Ont.) Blue Jays, Eric Gagne (Mascouche, Que.) Los Angeles Dodgers, Stubby Clapp (Windsor, Ont.) and Walker.
The current crop (14 plus two) is still a long way from 1984 when there were two Canucks in the majors: Terry Puhl (Melville, Sask.), Houston Astros and Doug Frobel (Ottawa, Ont.), Pittsburgh Pirates.
Upstairs in the TV booth are Dan Shulman (Thornhill, Ont.) and Joe Siddall (Windsor, Ont.) while handling the pre- and post-game panels from the Canadian Baseball Network central desk are Sportsnet’s Jamie Campbell (Oakville, Ont.) and Minnesota Twins broadcaster Justin Morneau (New Westminster, BC) with Hazel Mae (Toronto, Ont.) on the field.
Our in-studio panel also includes from MLB Newtwork’s Adnan Virk (Morven, Ont.) and and Ryan Dempster (Gibsons, BC), who anchored our staff for 13 consecutive years, longest serving pitcher, plus Blue Jays broadcaster Chris Leroux (Mississauga, Ont.).
(1B Joey Votto (Etobicoke, Ont.) who is re-habbing his ankle at Dunedin with the Toronto Blue Jays has been on 19 Canada Day rosters.)
Our 24th annual team includes major leaguers and minor leaguers. Fans can only dream that Canada could put a team on the field like this one in March for the World Baseball Classic.
Former ABC and Auburn slugger Edouard Julien (Ancienne-Lorette, Que.) will hit lead off.
The Lineup
1. 2B Edouard Julien
Leading off, as he did for Canada in Arizona during the 2023 WBC, is Julien (Ancienne-Lorette, Que.) who started the season with the Minnesota Twins and is now with the triple-A St. Paul Saints. There he is hitting .226 with two homers five RBIs and a .708 OPS in 24 games. He is making his second start and is on our roster for the third time.
The knock on Julien ever since the Twins drafted him from Auburn was his defence. Conversely the “bat will always play,” as scouts like to say. When demoted, Julien had a team-high 34% strikeout rate. He was hitting .207 with a .616 OPS. He has struck out 35 times in 93 plate appearances at Saint Paul.
Twins 3B Trevor Plouffe told Sports Illustrated, “I don’t think it’s the wrong move necessarily, but my understanding was, even up until like a week ago when they knew Royce Lewis was coming back, Eddy was kind of almost being assured that it wasn’t going to be him. I think the thought process probably changed.”
2. LF Tyler O’Neill
Batting second and patrolling centre is O’Neill from Walker’s home (Maple Ridge, BC), who earned back-to-back Gold Glove awards in 2020-21 with the Cardinals. He will be making his seventh Canada Day start.
Every time Joe Carter neared free agency, the Red Sox showed major interest. Why? Because at the time he was the only right-handed hitter to twice hit three homers in a game at Fenway Park. O’Neill does not have a three-homer game as yet (going deep twice in one game at Rogers Centre and Angel Stadium) but his production compared to last year is impressive.
Last year with the St. Louis Cardinals as manager Oliver Marmol carped about O’Neill’s hustle, he hit nine homers (in 72 games and 228 plate appearances) with 21 RBIs and a .715 OPS. This year at his new home at Fenway he has more production in less time: 16 homers (58 games, 210 at-bats) with 29 RBIs and an .876 OPS.
O’Neill has 94 career homers and when he passes Pete Ward (Montreal, Que.) who has 98 and reaches triple figures he’ll sit 11th among Canucks. He’ll be behind Walker (383), Joey Votto (Etobicoke, Ont.) 356, Matt Stairs (Fredericton, NB) 265, Justin Morneau (New Westminster, BC) 247, Jason Bay (Trail, BC) 222, Jeff Heath (Fort William, Ont.) 194, Russell Martin (Montreal, Que.) 191, Vladimir Guerrero (Montreal, Que.) 142, Corey Koskie (Anola, Man.) and George Selkirk (Huntsville, Ont.) 108. Freddie Freeman, who is WBC eligible has hit 333 homers.
Freddie Freeman played for Canada to honour his late mother’s memory and he’s hitting third.
3. 1B Freddie Freeman
Making his 12th Canada Day start and hitting third is 1B Freeman of the Dodgers. Freeman is WBC-eligible since his parents grew up in Windsor and Peterborough Ont. He owns a .298 average with league-leading 28 doubles, as well as 12 homers, 52 RBIs and an .905 OPS in 84 games.
On Sept. 27, 2023, he became the second Dodger ever with at least 200 hits, 100 RBIs, 20 homers and 20 steals in a season, joining Babe Herman (1929). He led the majors last year with 59 doubles, the most since Hall of Famer Todd Helton in 2000.
Vlad Guerrero (Montreal, Que.) presented with the Tip O’Neill award in 2021 by Canadian Hall of Fame’s Scott Smith.
4. DH Vlad Guerrero
Hitting clean up in his seventh start is Guerrero (Montreal, Que.) of the Blue Jays. He has been at first base, DH and even two starts at third base. Initially we were going to have him play third and bat fifth. But he put on a pre-Canada Day push, going 9-for-22 (.409) with four homers and 14 RBIs in his final six games. As hot as he is, maybe he should be third, but our analytical department decided we were best going right-left, right-left combination.
Three years ago on Canada Day, Guerrero had a 1.117 OPS. In 2022, he had an .843 mark. He was at .799 last year and this year he is at .796. He is hitting .297 and has 17 doubles, 13 homers and 50 RBIs.
Ontario Blue Jay grad Josh Naylor (Mississauga, Ont.) will bat fifth.
5. RF Josh Naylor
Batting fifth and playing right field is Naylor (Mississauga, Ont.) of the Cleveland Guardians. Last month, the former Ontario Blue Jay earned AL Player of the Week for the first time in his career, finishing the week with a .400 (10-for-25) average, with three doubles, three home runs, eight RBIs and a 1.303 OPS.
Naylor is batting .242 with 14 doubles, 20 homers, 61 RBIs and an .819 OPS in 78 games. This is Naylor’s sixth start and eighth time on the roster.
6. 3B Abraham Toro
Before straining his right hamstring and going on the 10-day injured list, Toro had 72 hits. Only Freeman with 85 and Guerrero with 79 had more hits at the time. That’s high-rent district for a guy who spent 96 games at triple-A Nashville last season (batting .291 with eight home runs, 58 RBIs and an .845 OPS). Toro is making his fifth appearance on our team and his fourth start.
He hit .316 in 28 games this May, with four of his six home runs putting the A’s ahead. He has started games at five different positions (35 at third base, 15 at second, 11 at DH, three at first base, and one in left field). In 49 starts this season, he batted leadoff, after having seven previously in his career.
Toro (Longueuil, Que.) has 15 doubles, a triple, six homers and 24 RBIs with a .689 OPS in 73 games.
7. C Bo Naylor
Appearing in 57 games for the Guardians, Bo Naylor (Mississauga, Ont.) would like to have a higher average when he looks at the scoreboard. Yet, he is catching for first-place Cleveland. A former first-round pick by Cleveland in 2018 (29th overall). He and brother Josh homered in the same inning -- the ninth time in history brothers have homered in the identical frame -- on April 10 against the White Sox. He hit a grand slam against Angels Reid Detmers.
Bo has nine doubles, four homers, 17 RBIs and a .565 OPS. Cleveland has faith Bo will be like big brother. After all, Josh hit 50 homers in 449 games (1,762 at-bats) in the minors, while Bo went deep 57 times in 405 games (1,461 at-bats) coming through the system. This is Bo’s third start and fourth time on the team.
He has been one of top pitch-framers this year, sitting tied for second among 61 qualified catchers for catcher framing runs (according to Statcast) with four, tied with Patrick Bailey of the Giants and Cal Raleigh of the Mariners. Bo has converted 50.6% of non-swing pitches in the shadow of the strike zone into called strikes, the sixth-best rate, according to Tom Tango (Montreal, Que.) of MLB.
8. CF Owen Caissie
Starting in centre is Caissie (Burlington, Ont.), now with the triple-A Iowa Cubs. Caissie has 17 doubles, two triples, eight homers and 45 RBIs. He’s batting .283 with an .847 OPS in 72 games. Caissie had three hits against St. Paul, including a triple inside the first-base line. This is his third time being on our team and his first start.
This season he had seven hits in a three-game series against Omaha ... two hits against Toledo ... Three hits in the St. Paul series ... Then seven hits against Louisville ... And seven more against Buffalo ... He had four facing Omaha ... Then, he had six in a series against Columbus ... Next was seven hits in a series against Syracuse ... He then had a nine-hit series against Louisville ... Two hits in the Toledo series ... Six hits off Columbus pitching ... Three in a five-game set against Indianapolis and five in the current set against St. Paul.
9. SS Otto Lopez
Lopez could be one of the best to ever play shortstop for Canada. Tis a position we as a country have trouble developing ... like the Expos. For years, the late Jim Fanning always said that the best shortstop his club ever had was Condredge Holloway, who never had an at-bat, choosing football.
After spending 2023 at triple-A Buffalo and having spent nine games in the majors with the Blue Jays, Lopez has appeared in 52 games with the Florida Marlins. He is hitting .252 with six doubles, three homers and 19 RBIs with a .629 OPS.
He spent seven games at triple-A Jacksonville hitting .556 with four doubles, two homers and six RBIs, as well as a 1.526 OPS.
Starter _ LHP James Paxton
The Big Maple is making his second, consecutive Canada Day start. Sure, he has a bunch of all-stars behind him like Mookie Betts, Shohei Otani and Freddie Freeman, but he has been throwing a bunch of strikes and doing his job -- giving his team a chance to win. Despite a loss to the Giants on Sunday, Paxton is 7-2 in 15 starts with a 4.28 ERA. He’s averaging over five innings per start. Paxton has walked 38 and struck out 53 in 75 2/3 innings.
A former North Delta Blue Jay, like Jeff Francis (North Delta, BC) and Justin Morneau, Paxton (Ladner, BC) is making his seventh Canada Day start and it his 11th time on the staff.
Closer _ Jordan Romano
And to close things out, our team will do just like the Blue Jays do in the ninth -- turn to Romano (Markham, Ont.) before he was sidelined by an elbow injury and then had a setback.
A year ago today, he had 24 saves (tied for the most in the majors with Cleveland’s Emmanuel Clase, but this season he has only eight, going 8-for-9 (89%) closing out games. It’s his fourth time as Canada’s best closer and seventh time on the roster.
Our coaching staff is deep with Rob Butler (East York, Ont.), Michael Saunders (Victoria, BC), Peter Orr (Newmarket, Ont.), Shawn Bowman (New Westminster, BC) and Clapp, Mr. Canada on the international stage.
Looking after our pitchers will be: New York Yankees scout Denis Boucher (Lachine, Que.), Jeff Francis (North Delta, BC), Eric Gagne (Mascouche, Que.) and Paul Quantrill (Port Hope, Ont.) of the Blue Jays. We’ll have as many pitching as the Toronto Blue Jays have hitting coaches.
