Right-hander Garrett Hawkins has been named the California League Pitcher of the Month for July.

The Biggar, Sask., native went 1-1 with a 0.95 ERA in four starts for the San Diego Padres’ class-A Lake Elsinore Storm. The Canuck righty allowed just two earned runs on 11 hits and six walks over 19 innings. He struck out 22 and held opponents to a .167 average.

The 22-year-old Hawkins was chosen by the Padres in the ninth round of the 2021 MLB draft out of the University of British Columbia.

The Saskachewan hurler, who honed his skills at the Vauxhall Academy and starred for two seasons with the Swift Current Broncos of the Western Canadian Baseball League (WCBL), is in his second season in the Padres’ system. In 2021, he posted a 3-1 record and a 2.35 ERA and struck out 27 in 15 1/3 in seven appearances in Rookie ball.

In all, Hawkins owns a 5-5 record and 3.94 ERA in 17 starts for class-A Lake Elsinore this season. He has fanned 108 batters in 77 2/3 innings.
