TORONTO, Ont. - The Toronto Maple Leafs have re-signed pitcher/ third baseman Jesse Hodges.
The former Team Canada member will be returning for his second season with the Leafs after spending seven seasons in the Chicago Cubs organization and two seasons with the Quebec Capitales of the independent Frontier League. Now living and coaching in Toronto, Hodges (Victoria, B.C.) had a productive first season in the IBL hitting, .242 with four doubles, two home runs and 12 RBIs.
He also went 1-0 with an ERA of 2.45 in 11 innings pitched.
Originally signed as a free agent by the Cubs, Hodges spent seven years in their organization, reaching as high as double-A in 2018 and 2019. He had a career average of .239 with 94 doubles, 34 home runs and 243 RBIs.
He also spent 2019 and 2021 with the Quebec Capitales of the Frontier League.
Hodges has represented Canada on the international stage numerous times, including winning gold with the national team at the 2015 Pan Am Games.
"Jesse was an instant fan favourite and clubhouse leader. He always had a smile on his face and was so competitive. It had been a few years since he had played and I think 2024 we will see even better on field results as he will now be more accustomed to the IBL and hopefully his work life will allow him to play a bit more during the season as well,” said Leafs GM Jeff Lounsbury.
For his part, Hodges is looking forward to returning to the Leafs.
"I am excited for another year to enjoy the game of baseball at the Pits," he said.
