Official Hamilton Cardinals News Release

HAMILTON - The Hamilton Cardinals have signed former Toronto Blue Jays left-hander Jose Fernandez (Mao, Dominican Republic).

Fernandez, 29, made his MLB debut with the Blue Jays in 2018, registering a 6.10 ERA in 13 games. In 2019, the 6-foot-3, 215-pound southpaw appeared in four games for the Detroit Tigers.

Originally signed by the Blue Jays in 2012, Fernandez has made 233 appearances in the minors, posting a 13-13 record, 25 saves, a 3.84 ERA and 309 strikeouts in 337 1/3 innings.

“We are so happy to have Jose here in Hamilton,” said Cardinals GM Jeff Lounsbury. “We lost Williams Ramirez to another league, and we were fortunate enough to get Jose to return to Ontario. He is big and strong with a low 90s fastball and we will be able to use him as either a starter or reliever. Jose is looking forward to being back in Ontario and has connections to both Buffalo and Toronto.”
