Official Hamilton Cardinals News Release

Hamilton, Ontario - The Hamilton Cardinals have signed right-handed pitcher Derek Zwolinski (Burlington, Ont).

Zwolinski has spent parts of three seasons in the IBL in Burlington, where he split his time with the Junior and IBL teams before leaving in 2019 to play with the Capital City Reds. He has pitched in 11 games and has 20 strikeouts in 39 2/3 innings in the IBL

While playing with the Capital City Reds, he played alongside new Hamilton Cardinal Ryan Burnside as well.

“There is familiarity with Derek and I," said Cardinals meneral Manager Jeff Lounsbury. "I recruited him to Brock where I coached him there and I was the coach in Burlington for some time as well and had the pleasure of having Derek up for some games. I always felt his stuff would play well in the IBL once he gained consistent fastball location and experience. He has a hard to pick up arm slot, lots of movement, and has a bulldog mentality on the mound. I look forward to seeing what he can do in a full season.”

Zwolinski says “he is looking forward to a great season with the Cards and getting back to the ballpark everyday.”

The Hamilton Cardinals are a member of Canada’s top baseball league, the Intercounty Baseball League. The 100-year old summer league is one of the oldest baseball leagues in the world, with the league established in 1919, drawing significantly more fans, in a friendly ballpark experience, than any league of its kind.
