Official Kitchener Panthers News Release

KITCHENER- The Kitchener Panthers are pleased to announce the signing of LHP Michael Mommersteeg (St. Thomas, Ont.) for the 2021 season.

Mommersteeg accepted a scholarship to Valparaiso University (NCAA Division 1) right out of high school to pursue his baseball dreams and get an excellent education. During his four-year collegiate tenure, he graduated with a degree in Political Science and Criminology.

As many student athletes do upon returning home from U.S. schools, he wanted to aim for his Master’s degree in applied politics. He decided to do it at Wilfred Laurier University in Waterloo. When the 2020 OUA baseball season was cancelled, he decided to defer a year so he could play baseball for the Golden Hawks in the fall of 2021.

This spring, he accepted a summer job with the City of Kitchener and will be a grounds crew member at Jack Couch ballpark.

“I’m super pumped to be joining the Panthers this summer and contributing to their future successes on the field.” said Mommersteeg.

The Kitchener Panthers are a member of Canada’s top baseball league, the Intercounty Baseball League. The 102-year-old summer league is one of the oldest baseball leagues in the world, with the league established in 1919, drawing significantly more fans, in a friendly ballpark experience, than any league of its kind.
